Social attitudes and its influence in Jurassic Park
Everyone has different personality traits that make them who they are.
People have both good and bad characteristics. Some characteristics are
considered to be one or more of the seven deadly sins. The seven deadly
sins are, lust, greed, envy, pride, sloth, wrath, and gluttony. The book Jurassic
Park by Michael Crichton portrays some of these sins in his characters.
Michael Crichton portrays that people can be prideful and he shows that is
one of the worst of the deadly sins by punishing the characters that show
this sin.
Michael Crichton shows that his characters are prideful. When Jurassic
Park is falling apart, the owner, Hammond, refuses to believe that any of this
is his fault: Hammond suspected darkly that was the reason for the downfall
of the park. Wu was the reason.(Crichton 125). Hammond justifies himself
by thinking that because Wu created the dinosaurs, all of this chaos is his
fault. Hammond failed to recognize the accomplishment of Wus creation of
the dinosaurs and Hammond didnt care to learn about what Wu was doing
with the dinosaurs. Hammond shows pride in many ways because he was
told many times by others that he shouldnt make the park, yet, he

disregarded the comments. He also made sure that no one would be able to
hurt his precious dinosaurs because he was so confident that he was right
about the safety of the park. Even after all of his obvious mistakes, he
blames it on others for not doing their job. He thinks about how next time the
park will succeed in the hands of other people with him still being in charge.
Hammond fails to notice the accomplishments of others and blames things
on other people so that he isnt seen as guilty.
Michael Crichton influences readers to think that being prideful is
considered the worst of the deadly sins by punishing the characters that are
prideful. Tim and Lex were playing T-rex sounds over the intercom; when
Hammond heard the sound he sprinted in fear, fell down the hillside, and
injured his leg: And so, as the afternoon wore on, he would have to climb the
hillside, injured leg or not. And that was what he was doing now. Those
damned kids.(Crichton 391). Hammond suffers because his leg is now hurt
and he cant get up the hill for help. Shortly after, scavenger dinosaurs
attack him and bite his neck, and he dies. Crichton shows to readers that his
pride is the reason for his suffering. If, Hammond hadnt have been prideful
he wouldnt have had the whole mess with the park in the first place. If,
Hammond had taken the time to listen to other peoples concerns instead of
boasting about how rich he was going to be he wouldnt have been stuck in
his situation. Crichton shows that because his characters are prideful, they
get punished.

In conclusion, Michael Crichton shows that some people are prideful,

and he tries to convey to readers that being prideful is bad because people
who are prideful get punished. Prideful people like Hammond dont give
credit to others, never admit theyre wrong, and blame things on other
people. Michael Crichton conveys to readers that being prideful isnt good
because the characters that are prideful get punished for being that way.
