Generalist Nursing Practice- Reflection

The main focus of this outcome is being involved in caring for all people in our
communities including: individuals, groups and families by ensuring their health care needs are
met through collaboration and partnering with other healthcare agencies. The recommendations
for this outcome are not surprising because I believe that nursing encompasses caring for the
whole person: mind, body and spirit and in order to do that nurses need to be knowledgeable of
our own beliefs and values as well as that of others to be able to provide culturally competent
care that may be linked to on age, race, gender or, religion and other factors to promote positive
outcomes for those who are entrusted to us. In my current practice I could use a variety of the
knowledge I have learned to help me provide the best quality care possible.
The first document I chose that is associated with this outcome was done in NURS 340
where a survey of my own community was performed .This windshield survey gave me insight
into the problems in my own community. The knowledge that I gained from this outcome has
prompted me to ask myself what I am doing to help my community. The second document
highlights a prominent healthcare organization that works outside of the government to provide
unbiased and authoritative advice to decision makers and the public. The IOMs mission is to
provide evidence for the private sector and the government to enable them to make informed
health care decisions. I feel that I have met this outcome by using the knowledge I have gained to
better serve my community and learn more about standards of care that have been set by
providing patient centered care and focus on quality improvement initiatives that improve the
lives of all people.
