The student will be given five questions from the Stephen F. Austin content covered in class. From
how Stephen F. Austin secured the land grants from Mexico, how many grants, the creation of
Coahuila, why he was arrested, and when the Revolution started.
Opening Hook
Does any one know when Texas Independence Day is? Why is it that particular day? 3/2/1836
because they waited for to declare on Sam Houstons birthday. What is a revolution? How did the
Texas revolution start though? It all starts with the patriarch and arguable most successful
colonization of the U.S. via Stephen F. Austin
Instructional Strategies/Activities
Handout for article/lecture. 3-6 minutes to read short article, then put into groups to answer a couple
questions on handout. What did we read? Lecture how/why Stephen F. Austin colonized
Texas/Mexico/Coahuila. How this led to his arrest and why the residents wanted to revolt.
CIT - Power point: maps of before/after S.F.A colonization to the Republic of Texas.

Grouping Patterns
Five groups of five, I.E. ones with ones, two with twosetc.
Closure
Who can tell me how many land grants Stephen F. Austin originally granted? Why was this important
to starting the Texas Revolution? Was it really a Revolution? Why? How did Stephen F. Austins
success in colonizing Coahuila spark the Texas Revolution.
