EXPRESSION AND FUNCTION

1. Expanding Brackets
2. Solving Equations

1. Expanding Brackets
1. Expanding brackets means we multiply out the brackets.
2. IMPORTANT
a. Look how many terms in brackets.
b. Every term in brackets must be multiplied by whatever is
outside the brackets.
c. Take care with the SIGN.
d. Remember the rule of multiplying negative numbers.

1. Expanding Brackets
3. Examples show how the 3 and the -5 outside the brackets
affect the terms inside the brackets.

3 x 4x

3 x -2

3 ( 4x 2 )= 12x - 6
-5 x 2x

-5 x +3

-5 ( 2x + 3 )= -10x - 15

1. Expanding Brackets
EXAMPLE:

3(-2x + 4) - 2(x - 1)

3 x -2x
1

3(

3 x +4

-2x

+ 4

-2 x 1x
)-2(

-2 x -1
-

-6x + 12 -2x +3

Collect the same term together

-6x -2x + 12 +3

ANS = -8x + 15

EXERCISES
a) 3(5x - 40) - 2(x + 1)
b) 30(4x - 3) - 2(2x + 1)

2. Solving Equation
There are 4 methods of solving equation
A

Equation in form + =
Using subtraction
+ =

Exp:
=
+ 5 = 20

+a is changed to the
right becoming -a

-5

= 20 5
= 15

Equation in form =
Using addition
=

Exp:
=+
5 = 20
-a is changed to the
right becoming +a

+5

= 20 + 5
= 25

2. Solving Equation
EXAMPLE

5 ( x - 3 ) = 35

Expand the brackets

5x 15 = 35

Change -15 to the right becoming +15

5x = 35 + 15
5x = 50
3

Change 15 to the right becoming 15

x = 50/5
x = 10
8

EXERCISES
a) 4 ( x + 7 ) = 64
b) -5 ( 2x + 4 ) = 41
