Activity: The Maze
Source: http://www.nea.org/tools/tips/maze-team-builder.html
Materials Needed: Tape, floor mat (optional), pen, paper
Activity Description:
Purpose & Objective: To encourage team building skills, leadership skills, problem
solving, and stimulate short-term memory recollection
Set-up:
1. Before beginning the activity, and if a grid on a tarp or floor mat is not pre made,
grid(s) must be made by taping a grid on the floor.
2. Grid (maze) size can range anywhere between 4x4, 5x5, and 6x6. It all depends
on what group and challenge level you are targeting
3. Divide students into one or two groups, for the exception of one student per
group, who will have the solution and will serve as the judge
4. Facilitator will explain rules
Implementation:
1. Students must line up behind each other facing the maze. First student in line
begins by guessing which square the maze begins on. Judge deliberates by
following solution of the maze that was handed to them. If correct, student must
advance to the next square in front or to the right or left of current square, but not
diagonal or behind. If incorrect guess is made, he/she must return to the end of the
line by following same path used to enter maze.
2. Students are to help each other by making sounds but NOT talking
3. Students will continue taking turns until one person finds the correct path.
4. The object of the game is to get your whole team all the way through the maze as
fast as possible.
Leadership Considerations:
This activity can be modified in a number of ways. First disability I chose to modify for
is traumatic brain injury. An individual who experiences severe trauma and results with
TBI can experience impaired physical mobility, impaired cognition, impaired verbal
communication and comprehension, and impaired coordination of movements amongst
other things. In order for him/her to perform this exercise, grids might have to be
widened in order for it to be wheelchair accessible and possibly eliminate timed
responses or competition between teams.
Another disability that this activity can be accommodated for is epilepsy. No
modifications have to be made but the staff must be ready in order a seizure occurs. It
would be best to avoid hard surfaces and have a pre-made mat.
