Graphing Exponentials

Exponential equations are in the form

If b > 0 and b < 1, it is decreasing
If b > 1 then it is increasing
Exponentials have an asymptote, the
asymptote will be the vertical shift(k).
The y intercept can be found where x is
zero.

Compound interest
Simple compound interest- when interest is
only compounded once per year.

Compound interest formula- is the interest

paid on the initial investment, called the
principal, and on previously earned
interest.

Continuous compound interest- when

interest is compounded continually.

Yearly = annually = 1
Semi annually = 2
Quarterly = 4
Monthly = 12
Weekly = 52
Daily = 365

Ex.1 You deposit $1,000 in an account that

pays 8% annual interest. Find the balance
after 5 years if the interest is compounded
with the given frequency.
A. Annually

B. Quarterly

C. Daily

D. Which would you choose?

Ex.2 Find the principal amount if you have

$3,526.50 after 7% interest for five years
compounded semi annually?

Growth and Decay

Exponential equations are in the form:

Ex.1 We start with only one bacteria which

can double every hour, by the end of one day
how many bacteria will we have?

Ex.2 In 1985, there were 285 cell phone

subscribers in a small town. The number of
subscribers increased by 75% per year after
1985. How many cell phone subscribers were
there in 1991?

Ex.3 Each year the local country club

sponsors a tennis tournament. Play starts
with 128 participants. During each round,
half of the players are eliminated. How many
players remain after 5 rounds?
