o #12: To demonstrate ethical and responsible professional behavior in the performance of his or her duties.
MELS competencies and Clarifying Objectives
Competency #2: To reason using mathematical concepts and processes.
o To justify actions or statements by referring to mathematical concepts and processes.
Competency #3: To communicate by using mathematical language.
o To become familiar with mathematical vocabulary.
o To make connections between mathematical language and everyday language.
o To interpret or produce mathematical messages.
Cross Curricular Competencies:
o Competency #1: Works in a team.

o Competency #4: To use creativity.
Lesson objective(s): [Taken from the MELS Evaluation Criteria & Progression of Learning]
o Students identify plane figures including square, rectangle, triangle, pentagon, oval, rhombus and circle.
o Students begin describing plane figures i.e: how many sides each figure has or the number of corners.
-Utilizes vocabulary, such as straight line or curved line, to describe plane figures.
o Use plane figures to construct objects or things.

Differentiation strategies to meet diverse learner needs:

Throughout each center, the activities are tailored to suit the individual learning needs of all the students. For example, in
the first center, students will be able to help each other identify the shapes. The students who can identify the shapes with
ease will be able to brainstorm effective clues to aid their classmates in guessing what the shape is. In the second center,
the students will also be able to communicate with their peers in creating their robot. For students who name the shapes
with ease, I will be asking questions including How many more circles does your robot have in comparison to the number
of squares? As well, I will encourage these students to add shapes including pentagons, octagons etc. For students
experiencing difficulty, I will write their name and date at the top of their graphic organizer and ask them to trace over it in
order for them to complete the activity. Additionally, I will provide them with these shapes so that they can refer to them
when they are drawing. Lastly, the third center will require the students to communicate with each other by playing a
board game. Through interacting with one another the students will aid each other in reading the instructions such as
(take an extra turn or lose a turn).
ENGAGEMENT: [0:00- 0:05]
o To begin the lesson, the students will be sitting at the front of the class (near the Smartboard). Here, we will
review shapes or plane figures (square, rectangle, triangle, pentagon, oval, rhombus and circle).
o I will ask the students questions like Which shape has straight lines? and Which shape has curved lines?
o Furthermore, I will ask the students what a side is or if they can show me what a side is on the plane figures.
o Lastly, I will write the words plane figures on the Smartboard and define it for the students as Any 2D or flat
shape that are made of closed lines which can be curved or straight. I will ask the students if the shapes that we
have reviewed are plane figures.
o If the students have difficulty, we will go over the requirements for an object to be a plane figure i.e: closed lines?
Curved? Flat surface?
EXPLORATION: [0:05- 0:15]
o I will then proceed to explain the activity to the students.
o I will ask the students to gather three or more articles in the classroom that has the form of a square, rectangle,
triangle, oval, rhombus or circle.
o I will give the students approximately five minutes to gather the objects and return to their desks once they have
done so.
EXPLANATION: [0:15- 0:30]
After the students have selected three objects, we will classify them according to their shape as a class.
o There will be a shape chart already set up on the classroom floor.
o Each student will be able to vocalize which item they have chosen and which shapes their objects represent.
o Finally, they will place their object in the correct box.
ELABORATION: [0:30- 1:00]
Following the creation of a shape chart, the students will be able to continue working with plane figures by working in
centers. Students will be divided into groups of four or five and circulate from one center to the next completing the
activities.
Center #1: One by one, students will be blindfolded and place their hands in a bin full of sand. Hidden in the sand, there
will be clear plane figures.
o With the help of their classmates, they will have to guess the name of the shape by feeling it.
o The classmates who are not blindfolded can aid the student by providing clues.

Center #2: In this center, students will channel their inner artists by creating their very own shape robot.
o The students will be provided with white paper and have to solely use shapes to create a robot.
o The students will not be limited in terms of how their robot must look. The ONLY limitation is that every piece of
the robot must look like a plane figure.
o The students will also receive a graphic organizer (half a sheet of paper), which asks them to write how many of
each shape they incorporate in their piece.
Center #3: The last center is a board game called Mouse Shapes.
o This is a great way for students to practice identifying shapes.
o The students will take turns, roll a die and play with their classmates.
EVALUATION
The beginning portion of the lesson will be used as a diagnostic to understand students knowledge of 2D plane figures
up until this point. Similarly, the first as well as the third center will serve the same purpose. On the other hand, the
second center will be assessed with the rubric provided in the appendix. The students will be evaluated in the following
manners: (a) creating a robot using plane figures or shapes and completing the graphic organizer
(b) the effort invested in their piece
(c) their ability to create a unique piece
(d) remaining on task throughout the activity
