sophisticated ancient cultures of the Babylonians, Greeks, Romans, Egyptians and Chinese, it took roughly 41,000 years from
40,000 BC to 1000 AD before anyone
devised a lasting formula for preserving
music in the same way that had benefitted
the other art forms for millennia. It then took
a further 600 years to arrive at a standardized universal system of notation.
Having had such a relatively slow start,
however, music has more than made up for
lost time, as demonstrated by this impressive
collection. Presented chronologically, it
enables you to hear how rapidly music has
developed. Sometimes, in a single volume,
you can detect a huge leap within the space
of 25 years.
Yet of course the works in this collection
represent only a miniscule number of all
those composed since music was first writ-
composers such as Tallis and Byrd in England, Victoria in Spain, Palestrina in Italy,
and Lassus in the Netherlands producing complex and richly expressive music to fill the
naves of great European cathedrals, churches
and chapels. Vol. 3 The tradition of instrumental music was established, with Italy leading the way in its development during the latter half of the century.
Most importantly, music began to be printed. Limited and expensive though they were,
scores reproduced in a book were now available, enabling musicians to stand around
them to sing or play their parts. No wonder
the new medium spread throughout Europe
so rapidly.

For a century and a half from 1600, the musical world would be dominated by Italy, to such
a degree that it henceforth adopted Italian as
its lingua franca. Composers since then
almost universally have written their performance directions in Italian. One particular
Vol. 1115 In his own day, Bach was considered old-fashioned, a mere provincial composer from central Germany, but his music
contains some of the noblest and most sublime expressions of the human spirit. With him
the art of contrapuntal writing reached its
apogee, yet the technical brilliance of his
music is subsumed in its expressive power,
especially in his keyboard music, church cantatas and other great choral masterpieces like
the St. Matthew Passion and Mass in B minor.
His instrumental music is evidence that he
was by no means always the stern God-fearing
Lutheran. The Goldberg Variations, the Italian
Concerto and the six exuberant Brandenburg
Concertos, for example, show that he was well
acquainted with the sunny Italian way of doing
things. Many of his most beautiful and deepest
thoughts are reserved for the concertos and
orchestral suites. His influence on composers
and musicians down the years has been
immeasurable. For many he remains the foundation stone of their art.

For the first half of the 19th century, the period of cultural history commonly identified as
Romanticism, Europe was gripped by general
political unrest, culminating in the 1848 uprisings. Nationalism, self-expression and the
struggle for individual freedom were reflected
in all the arts. It is important, however, to
understand that Romanticism in music does
not represent the antithesis of the Classical
style but rather its prolongation and transformation. That is why Beethoven, generally held
up as the culminating figure of Viennese Classicism, is no less fairly classified as a paradigm of Romantic subjectivity. Nor was there
any break in this stylistic evolution at midcentury: musical Romanticism, along with
distinctive national variants, continued into the
20th century.
Late Romantic

tre. During the late 1800s, music had gradually begun to incorporate intervals outside the
prevailing diatonic i.e. major and minor
scales, with the result that a work would feature an extraordinary amount of modulation
from one key to another. (This is known as
chromatic writing, since intervals from the
12-note chromatic scale as opposed to the
seven-note diatonic scales are used to harmonize a piece.) Thus the tonal centre of a
piece of music became less obvious. Schoenberg went further and asked If I can introduce
these chromatic notes into my music, can a
particular key be said to exist at all? Why
should any note be foreign to any given key?
Why shouldnt the twelve semitones of the
chromatic scale be accorded equal significance?
Thus was born twelve-tone technique
(serial or dodecaphonic are other names for
this compositional approach) and the music of
the so-called Second Viennese School of
Schoenberg and his disciples Berg and
Webern (in succession to the First Viennese
School of Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven). Not
all composers were attracted to the new tech-
nique, but dissonance, atonality and the abandonment of singable melody were strong
features of many composers work in the last
century, a period in which the avant-garde
took far longer to become assimilated by the
non-specialist music lover than the avantgarde of previous centuries. The polyrhythmic,
polytonal music of the pioneering American
Charles Ives Vol. 82, for example, once
seemed far too complex and radical ever to
achieve popularity. The very different voices
of acknowledged modern masters such as
John Cage, Elliott Carter, Luciano Berio and
Luigi Nono (the list is endless) remain a closed
book for many listeners, while inspiring a
fanatical following among others.
Other paths taken by music in the 20th
century retained the link with tonality and
(increasingly) with accessible melody. Harsh
and acid though some of the music composed
by Sergei Prokofiev Vol. 89 may be, his style
is a tangible descendant of the Romantics. His
Soviet compatriot Dmitri Shostakovich
Vol. 92, who shared Prokofievs penchant for
the spiky, humorous and satirical, followed on
from the same tradition, but the introspection,
ideas of Chaldean astrology. Of the succeeding generation, arguably the most important
figure has been Benjamin Britten Vol. 93,
whose many impressive stage works firmly
established English music on the international
stage.
In France, the most important composers
in the decades following Debussy and Ravel
were Arthur Honegger, Darius Milhaud and
Francis Poulenc, three disparate figures of a
sextet loosely grouped together as Les Six
(the other three made comparatively negligible
contributions), influenced by the whimsical
and eccentric composer Eric Satie and promoted by the writer-designer-filmmaker Jean
Cocteau. The most significant French composer of the second half of the 20th century
was the eccentric Catholic visionary Olivier
Messiaen Vol. 96, also an outstanding
organist and teacher, who introduced elements of non-European music and birdsong
into the language of Western music. Vol. 97

Gregorianische Choral (lateinisch cantus
Organum (schlichtere zweistimmige Stcke)
In England kombinierte John Dunstable feste rhythmische

Liedes. In seinen lyrisch-innigen Symphonien
verbindet er romantischen Ausdruck mit klassischer Struktur.
Der rasche Fortschritt des Klavierbaus trug
dazu bei, dass das Klavier zum beliebtesten
Instrument der Romantik avancierte. Kurz
nach der Wende zum 19. Jahrhundert wurden
erstaunlich viele komponierende Pianisten
geboren; die bedeutendsten waren Liszt und
Chopin.

fast gar keine Gemeinsamkeiten.

CHOPIN: NOCTURNES
The nocturne as Chopin knew it a lyrical,
meditative piece was invented by an Irish
composer, John Field (17821837). But it was
for Chopin to tap its full expressive potential,
and his Nocturnes have always been among
his most popular works. Italian bel canto
opera influenced the sometimes florid melodies he created for this poetic night music,
while the moods of his Nocturnes span a surprisingly wide range from melancholy to
pensive warmth to light-hearted wistfulness.
They can be dreamy or tempestuous, triumphant or erotically charged, even tragic but
always intensely expressive, quintessentially
Romantic.

berhmt wegen seiner vielen Affren. Fast

Schumann was one of the great figures of German Romanticism. In 1845, he wrote to his
friend Mendelssohn: For days my head has
been a whirl of trumpets and drums in C.
I dont know what will come of it. What came
was his Second Symphony, whose first performance Mendelssohn conducted a year
later. The Rhineland, where Schumann moved
in 1850, inspired his Third Symphony: its
majestic fourth movement captures the beauty of the great cathedral of Cologne on the
Rhine, and the high pomp of a solemn ceremony that Schumann witnessed there. But
four years later, the composer attempted suicide by throwing himself into the river.

Schumann has been described as the incarnation of Romanticism, because of his selfabsorption and the extra-musical ideas that he
often used as a point of departure for his
music. But there is also a deep current of
irony and even self-mockery in his works. By
the age of 30, when he married Clara, he had
composed some of the most remarkable lieder
ever written, including the two glorious song
cycles heard here.

BIZET: CARMEN
Bizet is the tragic genius of French music,
whose promise was left unfulfilled and whose
fame rests almost entirely on a single masterwork: Carmen, one of the most inspired and
best-loved of all operas. He entered the conservatory at the age of 9, at 17 wrote a brilliant
symphony that was discovered only in 1935,
and at 19 won the coveted Prix de Rome. But
most of his works remained fragmentary. Carmen failed at its premiere, and Bizet died soon
after. The night of his funeral there was a special performance, which was said to have been
almost unbearably moving. The press that had
condemned the opera three months earlier
now proclaimed Bizet a master. Based on an
1845 novel by Prosper Mrime, Carmen is set
in Seville and with music unsurpassed in its
vividness tells of the seductive gypsy who
ensnares a vulnerable corporal, Don Jos.
When Carmen then casts him off for the hand-
Bizet starb kurz darauf.
Meister. Carmen basiert auf einer Novelle von
Prosper Mrime aus dem Jahre 1845 und
spielt in Sevilla. Erzhlt wird mit unvergleich-

sphere. As in much of Bruckners other symphonic writing, the emphasis is on the anticipation, the long, questing build-up. Bruckner
also wrote a substantial amount of liturgical
music. The last of his large-scale sacred
pieces is a setting for soprano, four-part chorus and orchestra of Psalm 150, written in
1892.

SMETANA: MY FATHERLAND
DVOR K: SYMPHONY NO. 9
FROM THE NEW WORLD
The father of Czech music, Bedr ich Smetana
grew up in a German-speaking household
(Austria then ruled his country) and did not
learn the Czech language until he was an
adult. Although a tremendously versatile musician pianist, conductor and teacher as well
as composer he was not successful. Only
long after his death was his importance in his
countrys musical history fully recognized. My
Fatherland (c.187279), which the Czech
music expert John Clapham described as the
composers vast instrumental monument to
his nation, is heard and recorded more frequently now than ever before in the past.
Smetanas younger compatriot Antonn Dvor k
blended Czech elements into the mainstream

internationale Laufbahn aufzubauen.
New York. Die Urauffhrung mit dem New York
Philharmonic Orchestra in der Carnegie Hall
am 16. Dezember 1893 wurde ein triumphaler
Erfolg fr Dvor k.
Eigenschaften indianischer Musik verliehen.

ANTONN DVOR K
The mercurial G major Symphony is often considered his finest, even more satisfying than
the immensely popular New World that
would follow it three years later. It was one of
the composers chamber music partners who
asked him to write a cello concerto, but in the
end an English cellist played the premiere in
London in 1896, as well as the first performances in Leipzig, Prague and Berlin. It quickly became and has remained for more than
a century the best-loved of all Romantic
cello concertos. Dvor k added the meditative
final section after attending the funeral of his
sister-in-law, his first love. It is based on one
of his songs that had been a favourite of hers.

meiner Werke. Neun Tage nach der Urauffhrung starb er. Zu Tschaikowskys beliebtesten
Kompositionen gehrt auch die bezaubernde,
melodise Suite aus seinem letzten Ballett,
Der Nussknacker, schon lange eine Sule des
internationalen Konzertrepertoires. Das mrchenhafte Weihnachts-Szenario basiert auf
einer Geschichte von E. T. A. Hoffmann.
