Mark

making final project Handout:

Whens the last time something normal caught your eye? Artists will commemorate
pictures to show the beauty of places, people or things that are often forgotten. As an
artist you may ask How can depict subjects from a different point of view?. Over the
course of our drawing unit we have experimented with mark making (value and texture),
proportion and various compositions. These techniques all convey different messages and
feelings depending how they are manipulated. As artists we decided which strategies best
expresses the intended purpose of the art. My challenge to you is to make an artwork
inspired by an everyday object and transform it to appear creepy by using the concepts
used in class (mark making, proportion and composition).
Process:
1. Stain your paper so that you have an interesting background to work off of.
2. Bring an everyday object from home that will be the subject of your image
3. Sketch in your sketchbook four different potential compositions for your project
a. Look at dramatic lighting, angle and overall composition
4. Draw your object using sighting techniques
5. Consider how you will bring mark making (texture/value) into your picture
6. When your finished, write on the back of your picture
a. How you made your object look creepy, using texture, value,
composition, and imagination.
b. Explain one piece of advice that was given to you and why you chose
to either follow or not follow it
c. (Grammar and spelling will not be marked)
7. Hand in your project along with the compositional sketches

Criteria:
The medium plays a component of the picture (Mark making)
Background is addressed and enhances the picture
Subject looks proportionally accurate (sighting techniques used)
Object looks creepy
Texture and value

composition, and imagination.
