1. Briefly describe the culture of poverty theory. What are some of the criticisms
of this theory?
The poverty theory states that people are people are poor because of a willful
acceptance of their circumstance. Therefore, in order to escape poverty, they
are expected to break out of this mindset they have dug themselves in.
Critics of this theory deal with the ignoring of exploitative parameters such up
by the majority/power class, and the idea that the poor are to be blamed for
their poverty.
2. What are adaptive strategies and change-oriented strategies? Give examples
of each.
Adaptive strategies deal with the concept of the disenfranchised adapting to
their circumstances in order to improve their quality of life. Examples include,
strategies that would enable minorities to deal with the ongoing problems
they face via discriminatory parameters.
Change oriented strategies deal with the idea that ones particular mindset
and code of conduct must amend in order to progress from ones current

state. Examples include giving people new platforms of thinking for the
formation of new solutions to their predicaments.
3. What is the theory of internal colonialism and how can it be applied to the
colonized minorities in the United States?
Internal colonialism is the concept that certain minorities entered into the state
either willingly or unwillingly depending on the type of annexation. Native
Americas are often considered colonized minority because of their forced
subjugation, while certain minorities are considered immigrant minorities who
willful accepted integration, such as Asians.
