A Midsummer Nights Dream translation done by George Topirceanu

The Magazine/Publishing House

The translation appeared in Iasi in 1921 published by Viata Romaneasca, a

publishing house which first appeared as a magazine in 1906 in Iasi and
which then moved to Bucharest in 1930s.

Among the editors of the magazine were Constantin Stere, Gabaret Ibraileanu
which would influence Toparceanus writing style as well as George Calinescu.
Initially the magazine supported the ideology of populism founded by Stere
and emphasized the uniqueness of rural Romania, its authenticity in
opposition with urbanization and importing cultural values from Western
society. Stere argued that Romania should focus on rural development.

The magazine promoted values such as the importance of national culture

and that Romanians should not imitate foreign modes of culture. It promoted
realist writings and dealt with the idea of which cultural elements are
specifically Romanian. It wanted to help define the sense of national identity
and identify elements specific to Romanian culture, hence the emphasis on
the rural area.

About Topirceanu

He was supported in his writing by Gabaret Ibraileanu, he hated modernism,

especially symbolism. He participated in the First World War where he was
taken prisoner in Turtucaia in Bulgaria.
His writing was characterized by melancholy and sentimentalism alternating
with good humor according journalist Clara Margineanu from Jurnalul.ro
noting that his humor is the expression of a profound sensibility.
