Chapter 18: Reflection Paper
Chapter 18 takes off focusing on the trade of the early centuries after the
discovery of the Americas. The economies of Afro Eurasia and the Americas
benefited from the useful crops and animals that came from their respective
continents. Silver, which was discovered in large quantities in Mexico; financed
areas such as Japan which in turn supplied silver to China. Last but not least,
slavery out of Africa became more prominent in the new world which was the
subject of the chapter that interested me the most.
Slavery, which was pretty common after a certain time period; is always
referred to in history. But what was most interest is that the book mentions the
selling of slaves by the African rulers of the time. In most history classes this
subject is alluded to as if the white man just swarmed in and rounded up a ship full
of slaves. Slavery came in many different forms such as serfdom and indentured
servitude. In other history classes it is often toned down about what the slaves
endured during their trip. So yeah, the slave trade was a very interesting subject
covered in this chapter.
