HewasbornatSardis,AD346.Inhisnativecityhestudiedunderhisrelative,thesophistChrysanthius,andwhilestilla
youthwenttoAthens,wherehebecameafavouritepupilofProhaeresiustherhetorician.Hepossessedconsiderable
knowledgeofmedicine.

Eunapiuswastheauthoroftwoworks,oneentitledLivesofPhilosophersandSophists,andUniversalHistoryconsistingof
acontinuationofthehistoryofDexippus.Theformerworkisstillextantofthelatteronlyexcerptsremain,butthefactsarelargelyincorporatedinthework
ofZosimus.ItembracedthehistoryofeventsfromAD270404.
TheLivesofPhilosophersandSophists,acollectionofthebiographiesof23olderandcontemporaryphilosophersandsophistsoftheauthor,isvaluableasthe
onlysourceforthehistoryoftheNeoplatonismofthatperiod.ThestyleofbothworksismarkedbyaspiritofbitterhostilitytoChristianity.Photiushadbeforehima
"newedition"ofthehistoryinwhichthepassagesmostoffensivetoChristianswereomitted.
