DRIESCHER-Outdoor Load-Break Switches FLa 15/97

Vacuum Switching
There is a trend towards vacuum switching
In the seventies, basic research into vacuum switching was started in Germany. At that time, smallvolume oil switches had become established in medium-voltage systems through decades of reliable operation, and had become accepted by users as safe
equipment. Laboratory tests revealed that vacuum
switches are in many ways superior to traditional switching arrangements.
In distribution systems, the most important criterion is
safe electricity supply, and it is not high numbers of
operating cycles but a high degree of reliability that
matters. Even after many years of useful life, the
equipment must be capable of performing making
and breaking operations safely.
What is required is switching elements whose electric
properties will change as little as possible throughout
their useful lives. Vacuum interrupters are sealed hermetically, and extremely pure materials ensure that
the vacuum required for safe switching will be preserved over their entire useful lives. Even contact resistance will remain at very low values because in a
vacuum there is no oxydation process.

The advantages of the open-air load-breaking switches

Fla 15/97 over outdoor load-breaking switches with
conventional arc-extinguishing media are as follows:
faster dielectric recovery of the break distance
after each breaking operation;
high dielectric strength of the break distance;
short total travel and, hence,
compact drive mechanism;
less wear on contacts and, hence
longer useful life.

General
Unlike arc extinction in oil which has up to now been
customary in outdoor load-break switches, arc interruption in the newly-developed outdoor load-break switch
Fla 15/97 is carried out in a vacuum interrupter.
By virtue of an insulation system developed by
Driescher (patent pending), no liquid or gaseous medium will be required for external electric strength1) either.
The outdoor load-break switch Fla 15/97 is therefore
suitable even for special applications (including duty in
water-conservation areas). The outdoor load-break
switch Fla 15/97 is available for rated voltages of 12 kV
to 38.5 kV, and for rated currents of 400 A and 630 A.
Through the use of adapter parts, it will be possible to
use vacuum interrupter chambers even for retrofitting
installed equipment of the Fla 15/60 family.
