The product range comprises load-break switches for the following voltage levels
and rated currents:
12 kV
24 kV
in preparation
Load-break switch with stored energy mechanism, earthing switch and HRC-fuse
terminals
Advantages
no open arc occurs, thus neither thermal stress (contact burn-off) nor gas
emmissions
no blowing of the arc necessary, thus simple mechanical structure and reliable
switching of small currents achieved
simple operation because of reduced weight, low operating torque and angle

CONSTRUCTION
The three poles of the LTV vacuum load-break switch are mounted on a base
frame by cast resin pin-type insulators arranged in steps.
The contacts are almost vertical when open, thus a small installation depth
is achieved. Between the contact blades of each pole there is the arc interrupting device with auxiliary contact and a fully encapsulated vacuum interrupting chamber.
This vacuum chamber is a development of Peters & Thieding and is manufactured there as well. It consists of a fixed and a moving contact, sealed by
bellows.

FUNCTION
Figure 1: The switch is closed. The contact blades (1) and the interrupting
device (2) are connected to the making contact (3). The contacts
inside of the vacuum chamber (4) are closed and pressed together
by a spring inside of the chamber enclosure.
Figure 2: The opening procedure begins. The main contact opens. The
interrupting device is held on to the making contact by a hook (5).
The current commutates to the interrupting path. The main
contact continues opening. At a particular contact distance the
curve plate (6) begins to push the guide bolts (7) outwards and the
herewith connected contacts inside of the vacuum chamber open.
An arc occurs in the vacuum chamber.

Figure 3: The contacts inside of the vacuum chamber reach their maximal
distance. The arc extinguishes and the current is interrupted. The
contacts are held in the maximal distance by the curve plate.
Figure 4: During the further opening movement of the main contact the
release catch (8) reaches the end of the hook, the interrupting
device is released and leaves the making contact.

Figure 6: The main contact has reached its final OFF-position and the interrupting device is swiveled back between the contact blades. The
contacts inside of the vacuum chamber are closed again and the
switch is ready for reclosing.

DESCRIPTION
Drive mechanism
The LTV is available in two variants: with toggle spring
mechanism and with stored energy mechanism by springs for
storage of the energy for opening. The stored energy mechanism is charged during the closing operation of the switch,
thus a separate charging operation is not necessary.
Drive plate
(for manual
operation)
Drive rod
Operation
The switch is fitted with a 30 mm dia. actuating journal, 90
for right hand or left hand mechanisms. Operating of the
switch can be effected with a double-rod, bevel gear or flexball mechanism. For remote operation a geared motor with
emergency manual operation in combination with a doublerod drive is available.

HRC-fuse terminals
For the application as transformer switch fuse terminals for
HRC-fuses acc. to DIN VDE 0670 part 4 and DIN 43625 can be
provided. In connection with a stored energy mechanism a
mechanical trip device is provided. It is released by the blowing pin of one of the fuses and trips the switch three-phase.
Auxiliary switches
Load-break switch and earthing switch can be equipped with
auxiliary switches. They have forced-operated contacts for
ON- and OFF-position and thus fully comply with IEC 60694.
Number, installation and application of the auxiliary switches
are shown in the overview of the switch variants accessories.

For safety reasons, the switch is supplied in the closed position with the toggle
spring relaxed.
The operating mechanism has to be rated for a breakaway torque of max. 240 Nm
(opening torque under normal conditions: load-break switch 80 Nm, earthing
switch 130 Nm).
Do not remove the grease from the contacts, regrease if necessary (lubricant type
Isoflex Topas NB 52 or equivalent).
1. Install the load-break switch on a flat, vertical and strong panel wall or corresponding mounting rails. Take care that the base frame will not be bent.
2. Adjust the busbars and screw them in a way, that neither force nor torque is transmitted to the switch connections.
3. Install the operating mechanism to match the position of the actuating journal,
right or left.
4. Connect auxiliary switches, shunt trip coil, etc., as far as be existing.
5. Check the contacts for soiling, clean and regrease if necessary (see above).
6. Check the connection to the station earth, establish a flexible cable connection if
necessary.

COMMISSIONING
MAINTENANCE
Commissioning
1. Clean all insulated parts (insulators, wings, vacuum chamber encapsulation) with a
dry cloth.
2. Check the connection of all accessories (aux. switches, shunt trip coil, motor).
3. Check the busbar connections on tightness.
4. Check the load-break switch and earthing switch on mechanical function, if a stored energy mechanism is provided: check the mechanical tripping by the fuse pin.
5. Switch on the auxiliary power supply, if applicable.
6. Check remote operation and control, if applicable, i.e. function, annunciations,
remote tripping.
Attention: Before closing the switch with stored energy mechanism the operation
handle has to be moved in OFF-position and pressed against the OFF-stop.
Maintenance
The vacuum load-break switch LTV is of class E 3, i.e. only low maintenance is required.
Regular servicing of the switch is however recommended after:
Operation period of 3 to 5 years, dependent on the ambient conditions and the
switching frequency.
