History
• Canada is the homeland of modern
hockey.
– Early Canadian hockey games were played
with a square puck instead of a round puck.
• The first recorded women’s hockey game
was played in 1889.
• The first professional hockey league was
formed in the United States in 1904.
Rules

• Hockey is played on ice.


• Each team has six players.
• The object of the game is to get the
puck into the opponent’s net using a
hockey stick.
• Each goal is worth one point.
• The team with the most goals at the
end of the game wins.

• Goaltenders and defensemen are


responsible for keeping the other team
from scoring goals.
• Forwards are primarily responsible for
scoring goals.
• Body contact to take an opponent out of
play, known as checking, is permitted
anywhere on the ice.
• A hockey game consists of three
20-minute periods.
Basic Information

• A standard NHL hockey rink is 200


feet long and 85 feet wide.
• The goal cage is 4 feet high and 6
feet wide.
