BUCHAREST

Romanian legend has it that the city of Bucharest was founded on the banks of
the Dambovita River by a shepherd named Bucur, whose name literarily means "joy."
They say that his flute playing impressed many people and his hearty wine from nearby
vineyards made the local traders to like him even, and eventually they call the place after his
name.
Located in the south-east of the country, as the capital and largest city of Romania,
Bucharest still has the old charm that attracted tourists even after the First World War (19141918), when it was called "Little Paris" because of the brightness of its cultural life and its social
atmosphere, and thanks to its architecture, it was becoming one of the most beautiful European
capitals.
Bucharest is full of green areas, parks and lakes such as: Herastrau Park, Cimigiu
Garden, Carol Park, Bordei Park, Icons and Ioanid Parks; the main river that runs through
Bucharest is called Dambovita river.
Ceausescu's imposing Palace of Parliament is situated in the south, surrounded by wide
avenues. You can find the majestic Romanian Athenaeum music hall and the world-class
National Art Museum in the north of the old quarter. Follow the tree-lined Kiseleff Boulevard to
the Arcul de Triumf. You must also visit the historical center of Bucharest, a place still caught in
the time trap, which features a contrast between past and present that will surely astonish you.
Today the city is a mix of old and new, a mix of traditional and modern, East and West,
which gives the first appearance of originality and charm.
Like any other worthy European city, Bucharest has a historic district overflowing with
cafes and restaurants serving all kinds of food and drink. The Lipscani district has been the citys
shopping center for hundreds of years. You can feel the history with some traditional Romanian
food, but you can also choose some nice Italian meal, or simply escape the heat with an iced
coffee and ice cream while enjoying the ambiance of this town within a town, also known as the
Old Town.
Romanias vibrant and chaotic capital is a top attraction for visitors looking to
experience something different and authentic. Bucharest is one of the most diverse cities in
Europe, with a rich history and many iconic monuments, this capital is truly an impressive and
unique city.
