Some parents have made inquiries about sending in

birthday treats. It is not expected but if you decide to
do so, please remember that cupcakes (already packed
in baggies) would be easier to distribute at the end of
the day for students to take home. Please keep in
mind that we are encouraging healthy treats and
remembering food allergies. Non-edible items such as
pencils or stickers would also be encouraged.

LANGUAGE ARTS
In reading, students are learning a
variety of strategies to decode unfamiliar
words and strategies to understand new
texts. This month, we will be focusing on
the strategy of Questioning. You can
help your child at home when reading
with your child by doing the following:
Before Reading have them look at the
cover and think of questions they may
have. Ask your child what they think this
story may be about.
During Reading continue to ask
questions as you read the text together,
Use the W questions (who, what, when,
where, why).
After Reading review which questions
were answered in the text. Do they
wonder about anything they have read?
Do we have to make inferences to answer
these questions or can we research the
answer? Is it a question that we may
never know the answer to?

In writing, we are presently learning about

how to write Narratives and Fairy Tales.
We will continue to use the Write Traits
programme to help us improve our

Voice
In addition, we will continue to use the
editing code to help us edit a variety of
writing pieces.
We will also continue to focus on the
proper use of plurals as well as learning
some of the rules that make singular
nouns plural. Please encourage your child
to tell you what they learned about plurals
and help them come up with plurals that
do not follow the typical rules (irregular
plurals):
Examples:
foot feet
tooth teeth
person people, etc.

MATHEMATICS
We have finished up our unit on Two Digit
Addition and Subtraction with and without
Borrowing/Regrouping. Please review and sign
your childs test when it goes home and return it
to school the following school day.
We will be starting our new unit on Linear
Measurement, Area and Perimeter. In this
unit, your child will learn ways to measure
length, distance around, and area. See
attached Math Letter for suggestions on how
In Science, we are
continuing our unit on Life
Systems and Animals. We
have studied the life cycle
of birds and frogs and will
be learning about the
butterfly life cycle next. It
should be an exciting time
for all.

In Social Studies we will be starting a new

unit on Global communities using an
inquiry based approach. We will be
collaborating with Mrs. Jacobs class to
share in our learning of different
communities around the world. Please
continue to share your customs and
traditions with your child.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
If you would be interested in volunteering to help out in our room (in the afternoons), or for
upcoming field trips, please write me a quick note in the agenda and let me know the
days/times you are available.
