4) Who would be the

audience for your media

product?

Age
The target audience of my media product are 16-18
year olds. This is because the characters in my
production are 16-18 themselves (A). This means the
audience relates to the characters more. Furthermore,
the character of Billy is carrying out actions that my
audience would be familiar with. For example, chores
around the house (washing up) (B) and light exercise
(C). The characters in my media product could mirror
the lifestyle of the target audience which creates a
vicarious thrill from the safety of their cinema seats
when Billy is put in danger.

Gender
The audience for my media product could include a range of males and
females. Similar to previously mentioned, my media product would appeal to
Males because the character of Billy is easy to relate to, this is reinforced
through the use of close ups for example, (D) and over the shoulder shots for
example, (E).
The predominant audience for my media product is Females under the age of
18. Mainly because it features a strong femme fatale that this demographic
would enjoying seeing. Following research into modern femme fatales on IMDb,
I found that films with femme fatales such as Kill Bill Vol.1 (2003) (F), The Girl
with the Dragon Tattoo (20011) (G), The Good German (2006) (H) and
Tarantinos Inglorious Basterds (2009) (I), had high and often the highest
ratings from Females under the age of 18. The similarities between these films
and my media product, i.e. having a strong, dominant and powerful female
character, would appeal to the female, Under 18 audience and they would be
likely to enjoy my film.

Gender Continued
Female audiences will enjoy seeing females in the powerful
position in my thriller as well as those mentioned.
These films show great change surrounding gender roles
within the film industry. This is because very frequently in
the past, femme fatales used the feminine traits and sexual
appeal as the deviant characteristics. Examples include
Gilda (1946) and Basic Instinct (1992).
Females will be fed up with hyper-sexualised, clichd and
cheesy female characters in the thriller genre and will enjoy
seeing a character in the dominant position due to their
intelligence and determination instead.

Sharon Stone playing Catherine Trammell in Basic Instinct

Ethnicity and Nationality

The target audience for my media product will most likely be White
British. This is because the cast of my media product is entirely whiteBritish. The target audience will therefore be able to relate to the
characters and the action better, getting a better thrill when
something bad happens to someone similar to them. My media
product lacks ethnic diversity which many successful thriller films
have achieved. For example, Max (Jamie Foxx) in Collateral (2004)
and Somerset (Morgan Freeman) in Se7en (1995).
However, my media product will have wider and potentially
international appeal as there is a distinct lack of dialogue and cultural
signifiers. The narrative is portrayed through editing, parallels and the
soundtrack, as opposed to accents and regional references.

Lifestyle of audience
My media product plays on the common fear of being
left alone and someone coming to the house to either
kidnap/ hurt you. Parents often warn teenagers and
children not to open the door to anyone when they
leave the house. This concept can also be seen in Series
1 Episode 3 of the TV Series: Luther. In this episode,
Lucian Burgess (Paul Rhys) comes to the house of a
young mother, claiming to be a police officer (L). After
being welcomed into the house, he kidnaps the mother
(M). This is similar to my media product, as Billy opens
the door (N), un-expectant of whos on the other side
waiting for him (O).

Media interests
My Thriller opening was partly inspired by the opening to the Danish version of
The Killing (2007-2012) (P) . What I liked about this opening was the pace
achieved and the labyrinth connotations of the woods (Q)
The audience of my media product would enjoy this series because the target
audience of my media product 16-18 year olds, especially females, enjoyed this
Thriller. It was the highest rating demographic with an average of 9.4/10 (R).
My target audience would also enjoy The Bridge (Broen) (S) because of the
main character being a women (T) and mystery aspects similar to my media
product. Runaway plays on the mystery genre by showing Billys flashbacks
which turn out to be partly real.
What's more, fans of my thriller would likely enjoy the TV Series Broadchurch
(U) The similarity Runaway shares with Broadchurch is that the plot entails the
murder of a young boy, which the audience of my media product would be
familiar with and can relate to after watching Runaway.
