COURSE REFLECTION STATEMENT

Spring 2016
NUTR 408
Medical Nutrition Therapy II
Yumi Petrisko, MS, RD, CSSD
This course continued the exploration of pathologies of certain
diseases and the nutrition care processes. We used assessment principles to
determine the nutritional risk, nutritional status, and the application of
evidence-based medical nutrition therapy.
This class is essential to the foods and nutrition degree program
coursework. In it we discussed everything from food allergies to genetic
metabolic disorders. I especially enjoyed learning the pathophysiology and
medical nutrition therapy for food allergies. I have suffered from food
allergies in the past and its very interesting how food allergies and
intolerances can develop. This is a field of nutrition I am interested in
learning more about.
In addition to the lectures and exams, we also had the opportunity to
complete several case studies and write NCP notes. This allowed us to apply
our knowledge and understanding of the diseases and medical nutrition
therapy we were discussing. One of the case studies involved a diabetic
patient. This was an important case study for our education because as a
dietician I expect to work with patients suffering with diabetes regularly.

Everything that we discussed in this class is essential to the education

of a dietician. I really enjoyed learning how nutrition therapy can affect and
treat some of the most common diseases that Americans suffer with, such as
diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and renal disease.
