Hearing Impairment

Definition: Hearing Impairment


Hearing Impairment is a broad term to include both
deaf and hard of hearing. The term deaf is to describe
a person who has an intense hearing loss which cannot
benefit from any intensification of sounds. Hard of
hearing is the term used for people who may
experience mild to severe hearing loss these are people
who may benefit from amplification.

Hearing Loss
1. Conductive hearing loss: Is
caused by disease or obstructions
in the outer or middle ear that
usually affect all frequencies of
hearing. A hearing aid generally
helps a person with a conductive
hearing loss.
2. Sensor neural hearing loss:
Results from damage to the inner
ear. This loss can range from mild
to profound and often affect certain
frequencies more than others.
Sounds are often distorted, even
with a hearing aid.

Causes
Family history of hearing loss
Frequent and /or recurring ear infections as an infant or
toddler.
Some antibiotics and chemotherapy treatments that my
have hearing loss as one of the side effects.
Meningitis, measles and CMV (Cytomegalovirus)
infection
Some syndromes and disabilities have also been
associated with causing hearing loss, such as down
syndrome, pervasive development disorder, autism,
alport syndrome.
