QUESTION 1
a)

i)

Briefly explain the meaning of the terms Mechanics and Statics.

ii)

Knowing that a vector P = 12 / + 5 j and a vector Q = - 6 i + 8 j.

Determine: P+ Qand P Q .
(10 marks)

b)

i)

A friction force may be produced when a force P is applied on a block which is

placed on a rough horizontal surface. Briefly explain the four possible conditions
of this object according to the laws of dry friction. Sketch the diagrams to assist in
the explanations.

ii)

A lever AB is hinged at C and attached to a short link AD as shown in

Figure Q1 (b). Draw the free body diagrams for members AB and AD according to
the concepts of equilibrium of 2-force and 3-force members.

QUESTION 2
a)

Two buckets are suspended in the equilibrium positions as shown in Figure Q2(a).
Knowing that bucket A has a weight of 60-N.
i)

Draw the free body diagrams for the points C and F.

ii)

Determine the tension in the cord CF and the weight of bucket B.

b)

A horizontal force P = 80 N is applied to a 300-N crate as shown in Figure 0.2(b).

Determine the frictional force which is required to maintain the equilibrium of the crate,
and also determine the normal and maximum friction forces. Take JL/S = 0.3 and
^=0.2.
