Exercise 2.2
1.Answer
(i) p(x) = 5x - 4x2 + 3
p(0) = 5(0) - 4(0)2 + 3
=3

Note: p(0) is the constant term of p(x0, when p(x) is

expressed in standard form.

(ii) p(x) = 5x - 4x2 + 3

p(-1) = 5(-1) - 4(-1)2 + 3
= 5 + 4(1) + 3 =2

To find p(1) simply detach the coefficients and do addition

or subtraction according to the given signs.

(iii) p(x) = 5x - 4x2 + 3

p(2) = 5(2) - 4(2)2 + 3
= 10 - 16 + 3 = 3

Since p(-1/3) = 0 , x = -1/3 is a zero of polynomial p(x) = 3x + 1.

(iii) p(1) = (1)2 - 1 = 0 and

p(-1) = (-1)2 - 1 = 0

ma

Since p(4/5) 0 ,x = 4/5 is not a zero of given polynomial p(x) = 5x - .

Since p(1) = 0& p(-1) = 0, x = 1 and -1 are zeroes of the polynomial p(x) = x2 - 1.
(iv) p(-1) = (-1 + 1) (-1 - 2) = 0 (-3) = 0, and
p(2) = (2 + 1) (2 - 2) = 3 (0) = 0

Since p(-1) = 0& p(2) = 0, x = -1 and x = 2 are zeroes of the polynomial p(x) = (x +1) (x - 2).
(v) p(0) = (0)2 = 0
Since p(0) = 0, x = 0 is a zero of the polynomial p(x) = x2.

(i) () = + 5
() = 0
+ 5 = 0
= 5
Therefore, = 5 is a zero of the polynomial () = + 5 .

(ii) () = 5
() = 0
5 = 0
= 5
Therefore, x = 5 is a zero of the polynomial p(x) = x - 5.

ww

(iii) p(x) = 2x + 5
p(x) = 0,
2x + 5 = 0
2x = -5
x = -5/2
Therefore, x = -5/2 is a zero of the polynomial () = 2 + 5.
(iv) () = 3 2
() = 0
3 2 = 0
= 3/2

Therefore, = is a zero of the polynomial () = 3 2.
