Introduction
(Hook)

1. What is poetry?
- Ask students what they think poetry is
-When words are put together in an interesting way to express a feeling, create a
mental picture, tell a story, or make a difference. It expands the ears, eyes, and mind.
- Where do you find poetry?
- Everywhere (Many authors in one book is called an anthology)
2. Read The Jabberwocky for the first time (for entertainment)

1. Two Types of Poetry:


-Free-Verse: poetry without rhyme
-Narrative: a story
2. Go over parts of poetry:
-Verse: a line of poetry, but sometimes refers to whole poem
-Stanza: like a paragraph in an essay. Separated by a blank space. Anywhere from two
to eight lines.
-Meter: beat, or rhythm, of the poem (da-dum)
-Figurative Language: ways of writing that make stories more interesting and
expressive.
+Rhyme (Rhyme Scheme): repetition of end sounds (ABAB)
+Alliteration: repetition of internal sounds
-Consonance & Assonance
+Metaphor: indirect comparison. pillow of the sky
+Simile: direct comparison. like or as
+Idiom: a phrase with a meaning different than the meaning of the words piece of
cake.
