Title: Ground Control to Major Tom

Author / Director / Poet / Lyricist, etc. (if known): David Bowie

Context (Where Found / Viewed / Read . . . Variety of Sources, please, vis-a-vis Google Images only)
I first listened to it while watching Secret life of Walter Mitty. I thought it was an interesting song and I wanted
to know its meaning.

Content / CD / Summary (Say? Plot? Setting / Situation? Key lines / Phrases, Scenes, etc? )
This song describes dialogue between a man named Major Tom and his ground Control. He is an astronaut
who is stepping out of the doors of his spaceship and into space. Major Tom describes what he is seeing in
space and he seems to have an unsure but amazed tone to his voice.

Content / CM / Meaning? / Theme(s)?

This song is about having courage and going out into the unknown. At the time this song
was written, space was very popular and the first man on the moon was during these years.
Bowie uses this example of a man who is entering space and does not know what is in store
for him. It's all about leaning his comfort zone.

Form (Diction? Construction Terms? Symbolism?) This section MUST be filled out for poems taken from the
AP Poetry packet provided prior to first library visit.
Symbolism for leaving comfort zone. Uses an example to convey a deeper meaning.

Commentary: Why like? Poetic Traits? Relevance / Connections / Allusions (Lit, Bib, Myth, Histor, Other) /
Relevance to personal experience, 20Qs? etc.)?
I sort of had a connection with this song when I first heard it because my dad really likes the song and I
thought it was interesting how the song could be interpreted in different ways. Some interpret it as a
representation of drug abuse but I see it as a courageous man named Major Tom.
