In 2003, the Golf European Challenge Tour was held at Golfclub Schwarzsee
for the first time. Start your game with a 490 m long, very selective opening
hole. This is followed by the most difficult hole of the course: PAR 4, 414

A new dawn: 50 years after the club was founded, the
golf course was reopened on the Kaps Castle grounds
in 2006.

It has now become one of the most famous clubs in Austria, mainly due to
the outstanding sporting success of the club and its stunning location on Design: Maximilian Lamberg

Graf Lamberg (1911 - 1977), born in Linz
and holding a PhD in law, achieved re-
cognition in the sport of golf in Dellach
prior to the Second World War and there-
fore knew what was required to construct a
golf course - the money would come from
Mittersill. Officials were also interested
in the construction of the golf course and
so Lamberg secured the support of Baron
Carl Menshengen, the director of the tou-
rist board and Baron Camillo von Busch-
mann, Mayor of the city of Kitzbühel. The
first inaugural meeting took place on 1 Feb-
ruary 1955 at the offices of Dr. Buschmann.
Kitzbühel (Hi)Story. Also present were Baron Pantz and Alex
Hohenlohe of the Mittersill Castle Sport
& Shooting Club and Camillo Buschmann
and Carl Menshengen of the Kitzbühel tou-
rist board. The architect Morrison came to
Kitzbühel and planned the course (9 lines)
but was never seen in Kitzbühel again. Dr.
Carl Lamberg took over responsibility for
supervising the building work and helped
out himself when the worst came to the
worst. The Austrian Casino Corporation
was secured as a financial backer. On 30
July 1955, the course was officially opened.

It is generally agreed that the history of golf began in Scotland.

However it was actually the Dutch back in the 13th century who
first used a stick to hit a pebble towards a stake rammed into the
ground, using as few strikes as possible.
Seafarers then brought the sport to Scotland
where it soon became popular. The word
‘golf ’ actually comes from the Flemish word
‘kolv’ meaning club. In the 18th century, the
first golf clubs began to emerge in England
and Scotland.
Initially the clubs were hand-made from
two particularly hard types of wood and
were not affordable to the average person.
The first balls had a pressed feather core
surrounded by stitched horse hide. In 1948,
the first metal clubs were produced and golf
became an Olympic sport in 1900.
