The role of Rocky Balboa put Sylvester Stallone on the map. This role is one of the
most iconic roles in the history of film. It was about time that this loveable character
made his debut in the world of mathematics. Rocky Balboa ran up the steps to the Gates
of Math and entered as the Original Parent Function of Boxing. This function art was
based on the photo of Rocky Balboa after he beat Apollo Creed for the Worlds
Heavyweight Champion. Rocky is seen posing with his arms flexed displaying his physical
strength and his Heavyweight Champion Belt.
To create this function art, I started by graphing Rockys head and shoulders. By
referencing the picture, I was able to graph the rest of his arms and boxing gloves. I also
used my knowledge of the opposites, inverses, as well as the idea of reflecting over the
y-axis to aide in making the picture as symmetrical as possible. Once the head and
shoulders were graphed, I moved onto incorporating other functions into his gloves and
torso, such as the cubic, cosecant, and inverse variation functions. Continuing in the
construction of this legacy, when I was trying to fit the gloves, I realized that the
cosecant function would make a perfect championship belt, that is when I added the first
stripe of the belt.
The body made a perfect foundation for all of the embellishments that were to
follow. The thumbs were added to the gloves and the eyebrows, eyes, and nose were
added to the face. In addition to those add-ons, Rockys hair was made longer to cover
the sides of his face and ears using the inverse variation, the inverse of sine, quadratic,
and cubic functions. To finish the artwork, certain functions were made thicker and the
line color was changed. The final piece was then exported to the Paint Program where
color was filled in.
In the end, the Original Parent Function of Boxing contained 48 piecewise
functions, 8 different colors, and over 11 different parent functions, not to mention their

inverses and negative functions. Rocky Balboa is a legend in the world of film and he will
now be a legend in the world of math.
