Role of Military
The Military was the focal point for the Romans
as Rome grew and was protected by its military.
The military unit of Rome is called a Legion
When they retired, every legionnaire was
entitled to a plot of land to farm after 20 years
of service. It encouraged many people to sign
up
that the loyalty of the army was essential for
the empire to exist, but that loyalty could not be
taken for granted. The army played an
important part in Roman politics.

on instilling teamwork and
maintaining a level head over
individual bravery
Military Engineering and literacy was
stressed.
Responsible for building roads and
bridges along with military
contraptions such as siege artillery.

Territorial gains before the


Empire
Most of the Territory of Rome was secured
before the Empire was established
Italy, Greece, Spain, Gaul (France), part of
Britain, North Africa and Anatolia conquered
during the Republic.
The Roman Military was feared by everyone
including Rome itself as mutiny was a
continued problem.
Regular soldiers had more loyalty to their
commanders then Rome itself

Caesar Augustus
Appointed heir of Caesar, nephew of Caesar.
Fought in the civil war for the future of Rome
He won and used Republican traditions to
gain popularity and keep himself in power
Ruled for 40 years and is regarded as one of
the best rulers of Rome
By his death, the empire was an enormous
marketplace in which millions could trade and
travel under Rome's protection

Pax Romana
A period of 200 years where there was
relative peace within the Empire starting
with the reign of Augustus.
"Peace secured by victories
A term that means to keep the peace, you
got to fight somewhere else.
Fighting in northern Spain, southern Egypt,
Balkans and Albanian region to placate the
military and civilians who had been fighting
almost constant since Rome started

Empire Territorial gains


Expanding and solidifying control over
their allies, subjects, and barbarians.
not much compared to the Republic
Empire was focused more on consolidation
and Economics then conquering. Except
for the 2000 year war with the Persians.
Partly due to the Battle of Teutoburg
Forest, worst military disaster for Rome
and one of the worst in history.
