Annotated Bibliography: Dream Interpretation
Hurd, Ryan. "History of Lucid Dreaming: Ancient India to the Enlightenment." Dream Studies
Portal. Word Press, 2016. Web. 15 Apr. 2016. <http://dreamstudies.org/history-of-luciddreaming-ancient-india-to-the-enlightenment/>.
In this article, Hurd focusses on lucid dreaming. He starts in ancient India with Hinduism
and Buddhism. Here he talks about how this was the first documented case of lucid dreaming. He
them moves on to classic Greece and Islam, the dark ages, and The Enlightenment. He provides
different sides to how these cultures interpreted lucid dreams. This will also be helpful in my
paper because I will talk about lucid dreaming and what it means. I will include how different
cultures interpret them. I think it will be an interesting part that readers will enjoy.
Jones, Jean. "Psychoanalysis - Dream Interpretation." Psychoanalysis - Dream Interpretation.
AROPA, 2015. Web. 14 Apr. 2016.
In this article, Jones talks solely focusses on the dream interpretations and psychoanalysis
of Freud. He discusses some of his works and mentions what Freud was doing in each of them.
He talks about what Freud thought about dream interpretation and how he got interested in
interpreting dreams. This will be helpful in my essay because I plan on discussing Freud since he
is one of the most well known dream interpreters. Freuds ideas will probably be a big part of my
paper when I start to introduce all of the different interpreters.

In this article, Lack includes a brief history of dream interpretation. This covers
ancient times as well as more recent interpreters, such as Freud. He also gives a scientific
explanation to what dreams are and at what point in the night we have them. He explains what
REM cycle is, which is important to understanding how dreaming works. This source will be
useful in my paper because I need write about different dream interpreters over the years. It will
also be interesting in my paper to talk about how dream interpretation has changed throughout
time. I will also need to mention what the REM cycle is and how is works.
Randall, David K. Dreamland: Adventures in the Strange Science of Sleep. New York: W.W.
Norton, 2012. Print.
This book jumps into what it is that could make us dream. Randall organizes his book in
chapters with interesting titles that have equally interesting information in them. He provides
instances as well as examples of certain dreams that would be common for people to have. In
these examples, he also explains why people may have these certain dreams and what things in
your everyday life contribute to them. He also has a very interesting chapter on sleep walking
where he talks about actual cases of it that led to people doing awful things, such as murdering
someone. There is also a bit where he discusses lucid dreaming and how you could condition
yourself to lucid dream if you wanted to. Not all of the chapters in the book will be useful for my
paper, but I could use most of them.
Rock, Andrea. The Mind at Night: The New Science of How and Why We Dream. New York:
Basic, 2004. Print.
In this book, Rock writes about how and why we dream. She focusses mostly on the
science side of this. However, she also talks a lot about recurring dreams and nightmares and
why people may have them. She also has some things on lucid dreaming. There is also an
interesting chapter on why Freuds ideas on dream interpretation are not entirely correct and why

we dont use his ideas as much in todays dream interpretation. I will not use this book as much
as the other one, but I will be able to use some of the points made in here. I will also be able to
use the bit about recurring dreams.
"Sleep Education - Sleep Disorder and Sleep Health Information." Sleep Education - Sleep
Disorder and Sleep Health Information. American Academy of Sleep Medicine, n.d.
Web. 15 Apr. 2016. <http://www.sleepeducation.org/>.
This educational website has a lot of very useful information for my paper. It focusses on
almost all of the things I will be talking about in my paper. It has information on nightmares,
sleepwalking, lucid dreams, REM sleep, sleep terrors, sleep paralysis, and sleep hallucinations. I
will probably refer back to this website a few times when writing my paper.
