Lesson Title: The 3 Stages of Water
Science
Grade: 2nd Grade
Elementary School
Type of Lesson:

Practice and Review

Objective(s):
Students will make predictions, learn how
water goes through three stages, and record
what they have learned

Date of lesson: 10/27/15

Content Area: Physical
School: Bright
Multicultural Goals:
Lesson is the same for every student, no
multicultural goals applied
Assessment Tool(s): informal worksheet and
observation
Assessment Criteria: Hoping the can predict
what will happen with the water, and I can
assess this with their worksheets

Academic Standards:
2.1.3. Predict and experiment with methods (e.g. sieving, evaporation) to separate solids
and liquids based on their physical properties
Differentiation/Adaptations: (How will my instruction be different for students who are not
yet ready for this level of skill; How will my instruction be different for students whose skills
are beyond this lesson?)

1.1.2 Characterize materials as solid or liquid, investigate their properties, record

observations and explain the choices to others based on evidence (i.e., physical
properties).
3.1.3 Investigate and recognize that sound moves through solids, liquids and
gases(e.g., air).
Background Knowledge/Prerequisite Skills:
Multiple Intelligences/Learning Styles &
The students need to know the three stages
Blooms Levels:
of matter (solid, liquid, and gas) and be
visual; auditory; knowledge; comprehension;
aware that they can easily be manipulated.
application.
Materials: Worksheet, water, ice cubes,
burner, or candle with matches(evaporate
water)

Technologies Implemented:
If chosen, a burner to evaporate the water
can be used.

Modifications (meet IEP for individual students)

Aid available to help read worksheet to students and work one on one if needed.
Anticipatory Set:
Ask the students what they three stages of matter are, ask what elements must be applied
to make them change.
Procedures:
After lesson about matter, review over the three stages, pass out worksheet, have students
make predictions, perform lab, and then review over if the predictions were correct.

Closure : State again, the three stages of matter (solid, liquid, gas, then discuss other
things that go through these changes besides water, wrap up with how they change.
