Constitutional Convention Plans Summary

The Virginia Plan was outlined by James Madison in 1787 and presented by Edmund
Randolph in the constitutional convention. This was a plan to make a new stronger
central government also the Virginia Plan gave advantages to the larger states
because since these states had a greater populations they were going to have more
power and the Virginia plan consist of two bicameral legislature. The Virginia plan
proposed to correct the Articles of Confederation and to accomplish its objectives. It
also created three branches which had to share power this branches were the
legislative, executive, and the judicial. The Virginia plan too created the concepts of
checks and balance. This concept was created in order to keep equal power in each
branch and to keep them stable and under control by allowing each branch to have
some access to one another expertise.
The New Jersey Plan was presented by Willian Paterson also in the constitutional
convention of 1787. William Paterson was important because he fought for the
rights of the smaller states, he was in contrast of the Virginia Plan. The New Jersey
Plan wanted a strong national government with only one legislature chamber and
for each state to have a vote because since they worried that the smaller states
werent going to have too many representatives as the larger states. However the
New Jersey Plan also wanted to have three branches in legislature just like in the
Virginia Plan. In the New Jersey Plan it demanded to collect taxes from states based
on their number of population and for authority to be able to persecute a citizen

from one state under the law of the other state for a crime that person had
committed.
The Connecticut/ Great Compromise was the final agreement it was a workable and
acceptable plan between the large and small states on how the New Federal
Government in the United States was going to be represented. Roger Sherman
created the Connecticut Compromise in 1787, this compromise was created to
satisfy both the large and small states in order to stop the debate of the Virginia
plan and the New Jersey Plan. The Connecticut compromise stablish that there was
going to be a two house legislature and it would have a house of representatives
and a senate. This compromise guarantee equal representation to both large and
small states. The agreement of the Great Compromise helped to prevent the
convention to collapse.
