Week #1 Reflection

My time teaching in second grade in Plainview thus far has been wonderful. The staff
members have all been so helpful and kind, and the students have exceeded my expectations
both behaviorally and academically. I am so impressed with how this school system is run. I was
struck that my students have physical education on seventy-five percent of their days. It is clear
to me that every decision is made with the students best interest at heart. I know that being in
this environment will help shape me into an even better educator.

I was quickly placed in a unique experience. I began my placement early, going in 3 days
the prior week. Most of this time was spent observing or working with individual students. I am
very glad I made this effort, for it paid off when my cooperating teacher had to be gone on
Monday. Although there was a substitute in the room, I decided to take charge. With the subs
approval, I took over teaching for the day. The day went so well. Although there were many
obstacles I faced, and didnt know how everything ran, I did my best and accomplished
everything in the sub plans. While reflecting upon the situation, I became very thankful for the
confidence I have gained in myself as an educator. I was so comfortable being in front of a
room of students.

The rest of the week was filled with the good, the bad, and the ugly. Ive triumphed with
students as they finally understand how to subtract two digit numbers, talked with a student
who was caught stealing, and had a student throw-up right in front of me. Although not all of
these situations have been extremely joyful, I have become better prepared to handle similar
situations in the future. I will continue to find the lesson in every situation I am placed in.
