Unit:Digital Citizenship

Ask students what ways they are safe while


outside on the playground.
Ask students if they have used technology
before and if theyve practiced safe ways.
Middle of Lesson
(Hook) Read Chicken Clicking by Jeanne Willis.
Explain to students that there are many different
ways the internet can be used and show some
examples. Then explain how being safe on
different websites is important. Students could
then collaborate with teacher and their students
to make a list of safe internet practices and write
them in front of class using smartboard
technology to write the rules on the powerpoint.
Internet Rules
Ask a parent or teacher before going to a
website.
Only talk to people that you know.
Stick to places that are just right for you.
Dont give out private information.
Be polite to others online.
Emphasis on a positive digital footprint.

Allow students to use devices (iPads,


computers) in groups of 3-4 to visit safe websites
provided.

Each group will report out with why they thought


the websites they visited were safe, students will
have an organizer to fill in. If students didnt think
they were safe they will explain why.
Have students fill out an online survey about
making safe decisions online. This survey will
involve multiple choice, true/false, and short
response.
