Key Assessment: Internet Safety

Identification of Learning Problem
General Audience
The primary audience consists of 106 fifth grade students are Factory Shoals Elementary School.
These students are a part of a BYOT school district and are allowed to use technology
throughout the school day. Each class consists of co-taught special education, general education,
and program challenge students. There is one student with a 504 to use technology as a tool for
learning.
Problem Identification
Douglas County schools adopted the BYOT (Bring Your Own Technology) policy a few years
ago. While it is amazing that students get to engage in 21st century learning experiences, they do
not get any training on the use of the internet. They are warned of the dangers from some
teachers and possibly at home, but it is not required so some students may not know the dangers
of the internet and cyberbullying. To keep the students focus on learning and not on dangerous
internet habits they need to be taught the dangers of being in an online virtual world.
Instructional Goals

Learner Analysis
Introduction
The targeted group of students are in the fifth grade at Factory Shoals Elementary in Douglasville,
Georgia. They range from ages 9-12. As a teacher to these students I have seen the careless and immature
behavior of students while online. Many online activities done at this school and in this grade happen
with a lot of instruction and modeling due to the lack of experience the students have with the online
environment. The students are held to a high expectation in fifth grade and I feel with the knowledge of
responsibilities while online they can achieve many things.

Entry Skills and Prior Knowledge

Understanding of the internet

Knowledge of how to get online
Basic computer skills
Understanding of URLS/Links

This information was through collaborating with a teammate who also incorporates technology frequently
in her classroom. I also talked with Mrs. Blevins, the media specialist, to plan the lesson. We wanted to
focus on the daily issues while students try to access the internet. We feel if these entry skills and prior
knowledge were not an issue things would run more smoothly.

Attitudes Towards Lessons on Computer Skills

The majority of the students do not like to sit through lecture-based presentations, but they have noted on
many occasions their struggles quickly and smoothly logging onto the computer to access the internet.
Their problem-solving skills are lacking so most students request help from the teacher for minor issues.
The students prefer a lesson on internet through hands-on activities or videos.

Educational Ability Levels

Eighty percent of the students are in a general education classroom for the 8 hours they are in school. Five
percent of the students are in a resource classroom for a minimum of 60 minutes each day, and five
percent of them are in a resource classroom for a minimum of 90 minutes each day. Ten percent of the
students are in the gifted program. Although I have varying ability levels in the fifth grade, most of them
need the extra assistance on using the internet correctly and preventing cyber bullying. Due to the fact
that I have inclusion students being involved in the lesson, they will need extra supports while working
through the lesson.

General Learning Preferences

The students in the classroom are nine to eleven years old. This means majority of them prefer hands-on
practice or videos to learn new material. When they are able to be creative it is a win for most of them.
Those that do not prefer this learning style prefer worksheets or basic school work.
Attitude Toward Students and School
The class is full of students who are eager to learn and are respectful to students and staff. They
appreciate getting to use technology at FSES, but they wish it was more often. When talking about this
lesson idea to my students most were interested and supporting each other in the need for more training
on the use of the internet.

Group Characteristics
Factory Shoals Elementary School is located in Douglasville, Georgia. The students are in a Title I school
so 97% or higher of our students are on free or reduced lunch. The digital divide is definitely evident
here. A lot of our students dont have internet access or they do not have a computer or cellphone at home.

Lesson 1 Assessment
Since students will be pledging to act as a responsible digital citizen, they will answer the
following questions on our Padlet board.
When you sign a pledge you are _____________.
Why do teachers go over classroom expectation every year?
Which of the following statements probably is NOT on a digital citizenship pledge?

Content Sequencing and Instructional Strategies

Below you will find the instructional sequence being used to train educators on the use of digital
assessments to collect data:

This sequence reflects the sequence each student would use as they enter an online environment.
They are required to know the expectations, participate by being respectful and using the internet
correctly. Lastly, they use the internet to respectfully communicate with others. It is most
important that they learn of the norms and responsibilities before allowing them to participate or
collaborate.
Lesson 1: Creating a Positive Online Community
Objective 1: How to recognize the dangers and irresponsible behaviors associated with the
internet.
Initial Presentation: Introduce the idea of an online community to students. Students view videos
and curated resources for information.

Generative Strategy: Students comment on a blog to show understanding and answer questions
on Padlet to evaluate learning.
Formative Evaluation Plan
To collect learner evaluations on the lesson I will ask that each individual complete a
questionnaire on Padlet. I feel this will allow students to collaborate and see others ideas while
constructing their own.
1. When you sign a pledge, you are _________________.
a. B) Making a promise to do something
2. Why do teachers go over classroom expectations every year?
a. A) They want to build a classroom community that has common expectations.
3. Which of the following statements probably is NOT a digital citizenship pledge?
a. C) We pledge to finish all of our homework every night.
Each survey question focuses on hot topics discussed during the lesson. If the student are able to
answer all three questions correctly then they understand the importance of signing the pledge,
the ideals of a community, and the acts of a responsible digital citizen. Also, by these being
posted on Padlet, the students can revisit the site to review topics we discussed and the overall
idea others have.
