LANGUAGE ARTS Lesson 21 (A Chair for my Mother)

Materials: Transparency R107, robust vocabulary slideshow, diphthong bingo, Storytown text, Read-Aloud
anthology, Flocabulary YouTube video: 5 Elements of a Story

Objectives:
The students will

Utilize knowledge of sounds, letters, and words to


build reading comprehension

Decode vowel diphthongs /ou/ ou, ow and apply


this decoding strategy to read sentences and
answer questions.

Procedure with Amount of Time Stated for Each Activity:


(Morning)
Teacher will call students to the back of the room to introduce the new unit and corresponding skills posted on the
language arts wall. The teacher will cover eight different areas (fluency, comprehension, phonics, etc.) associated
with the new unit and will prompt student question, answer, and discussion during the presentation of each
language arts area. (20 30 minutes)
(Afternoon)
Using transparency R107, the teacher will introduce vowel diphthongs /ou/ ou, ow words. The students will choral
read a list of words with ou and ow diphthongs and answer the corresponding questions. They will use their dry
erase boards to identify diphthongs within a text. The class will then play diphthong bingo. (30 minutes)
