Activity E10: Musical Islands

Equipment: Hula hoops
Activity Description:
1.
2.
3.
4.

Greet everyone with a hello.

Set the hula hoops in a circle.
The clients will walk around the circle of hula hoops while the music is playing.
When the music stops, everyone must get inside a hoop within 5 seconds. If not they will
be out.
5. Repeat until the last hoop is left. Then everyone who is left are declared the winners.
Leadership Considerations:
This game is very fun and helps groups of people work together rather than fight for
themselves like in musical chairs. That being said, there is still a level of competitiveness
amongst the participants. There may be pushing and shoving to try and fit into the hula hoops. It
will be inevitable but try to keep it playful and not hurtful.
Those with hearing disabilities will not be able to hear the music. A simple remedy to this
is to create a visual que that will let them know when the music stops and when the music plays.
Having a stop light with green meaning go and red meaning stop is an example.
At risk youth may be a little violent in their quest to win at this game. To untrain them in
their maladaptive behavior, we can have them work with other people at all times. This will help
them to make friendships and also see that they and others can win the game with him.
