Fiske argues that television is
centrally concerned with the
representation of people.
Representations in the media is
always constructed from the

Case Study- The Inbetweeners

TV Drama is different from

film and news
Characters are three
dimensional(physical
appearance, social values,
characteristics)
Characters are repeated so
they live in a similar time
scale to us. (e.g four
characters from
Inbetweeners go to school,
live a normal teenage live)
Fiske argues TV Drama has
polysemic (more than one)
reading.
Representation depends on
personal experience.
Plot development can take
weeks, months or years.

Fiske argues that the news

pretend to be real and
authorative but it actually
borrows from the conventions
of non fiction when
representing individuals
The heroes in broadcast news
are the police, priminister and
the government, those without
social power or lower social
status are only seen in the
news when they are deviant
disruptive or involved in some
kind of violent conflict
We as an audience and
consumer of media products
