Fire Drill Standard Operating Procedure


*Signal will be given by Fire Alarm*

Procedure During Class Time


1. Students will line up signal file by the classroom door in an orderly
fashion
2. Teacher will gather the following emergency materials in an urgent
manner
a. Emergency Folder
i. Includes a step by step list for fire drills
ii. Includes a roster from each one of your classes, map of
the exit, and regrouping point.
iii. Includes emergency placards that will be used once your
class is at its designated regrouping point
1. Green- All students are accounted and there are no
injuries.
2. Yellow- No students are injured; a student is not
with your group but may be with another teacher;
you have a student with you that is from another
class
3. Red- A student is injured; you are unaware of where
a student is; another situation arises that needs
immediate attention.
3. Teacher will instruct class to begin walking out of the classroom to
the designated regrouping area listed below.
a. Note: must exit using the nearest exit.
i. First floor offices, Resources rooms and 4th grade classes
are to exit through the exit on the side of building by the
stairwell into the bus parking lot for regrouping.
ii. First floor 5th grade classrooms are to exit through the
back exit of the building and head to the left towards the
bus parking lot for regrouping.
iii. Second floor offices and 6th grade are to go down the
stairwell and exit through exit on the side of the building
by the stairwell into the bus parking lot for regrouping.
iv. Second floor 7th and 8th grade classrooms are to exit
through the back of the building, walk down the stairwell
and head to the right towards the open area behind the
building.
v. Groups located in the Caf are to exit through the side
foyer doors, walk straight ahead under the awning
towards the bus parking lot at the Kitchen staff relocation
area, or exit through the metal doors located on the back
left wall of the caf and head towards the open area
behind the building.
vi. Staff in the Admin Wing are to exit through the front doors
into the regular parking lot for regrouping.

vii. Staff in the Kitchen area are to exit through the back door
of the kitchen and head to the open area by the bus
parking lot.
4. Teacher will ensure all students are out of their classroom.
5. Teacher will turn off their light and close the classroom door.
a. Note- Your door does not need to be locked.
6. Once teachers and students have made it to the regrouping area
students will line up in signal file lines in the direction away from the
school.
7. Teacher will walk up and down rows, visually checking that each
student is with them.
8. Once each student has been accounted for- teacher will raise one of
the placards accordingly.
a. Green-All students are accounted for and uninjured.
b. Yellow-All students are uninjured, but 1 or 2 students may not
be with your particular class. I.e. they were in the hallway,
wandered off, etc. or you may have a student with you that is
from another class.
c. Red-Students may be injured, you are completely unsure where
a student is, many students are missing.
9. Administrators will utilize cell phones to communicate important
details.

Director of Operations will check the Admin wing, the
Principal will check the first floor office area, caf and kitchen
area, the Dean of Students will check first floor classroom areas
and resource rooms, and the Director of Instruction will check
the second floor to ensure all individuals are out safely and the
building is secure.
Process: Check each room, bathroom, and ensure all doors are
closed.
11.
The beginning of the drill to the all clear moment
should be completed in 5 minutes or less.
Procedure During Morning Sessions, Lunch, Transition times
1. Students will proceed outside to the regrouping area. Students will
gather with familiar teachers.
2. Teachers will make it a priority to group their students into their
classes to the best of their ability.
3. Teachers who are in their room should bring their rosters outdoors to
assist in accounting for all students.
4. Teachers will develop an understanding of how many students are
accounted for and any potential missing students.

DOO-Principal Building Check-List


Admin Wing (DOO)
-Check offices for remaining staff and visitors.
-Check Bathrooms for remaining staff and visitors.
-Check Child Care rooms for remaining staff and
children.
-Check that all office and bathroom doors are closed.
-Check Front parking lot reloction area to ensure all
students are accounted for.
-Check for Placard Colors in regular lot (Green,
Yellow, Red).

-Communicate status of building and student safety with


Principal, DOS, DOI.

Caf and Kitchen Area, First floor offices (Principal)


-Check First floor offices and IC Central room for
remaining students and staff.
-Check Caf for remaining students.
-Check kitchen area for remaining staff.
-Check that all doors in kitchen area are closed.
-Check Bus lot relocation area to ensure all students are
accounted for.
-Check for Placard Colors in bus lot (Green, Yellow,
Red).
-Communicate status of building and student safety with
DOO, DOS, DOI.

First Floor Classroom areas (DOS)


-Check Classrooms for remaining students and staff.
-Check Bathrooms for remaining students and staff.
-Check that all classroom doors are closed.
-Check Resource rooms for remaining students and staff.
-Check back of building relocation area to ensure all
students are accounted for.

-Exit back door of hallway and check for Placard


Colors behind the building (Green, Yellow, Red).
-Communicate status of building and student safety with
DOO, Principal and DOI.
Second Floor Classroom areas (DOI)
-Check second floor offices, resource rooms and
workroom.
-Check Bathrooms for remaining students and staff.
-Check Classrooms for remaining students and staff.
-Check that all classroom doors are closed.
-Check Back relocation area to ensure all students are
accounted for.
-Exit back door of hallway and check for Placard
Colors in back of building (Green, Yellow, Red).
-Communicate status of building and student safety with
DOO, Principal, and DOS.
Note: If a student, staff or visitor is found in the building
during your check, be sure to walk them out with you
through the nearest exit.
Emergency Services Notification/Contact Information
1. In case of an actual fire or physical danger to the building Henderson
Fire Department can be reached at 911 or (252) 431-6045.
a. Chief of Fire-(252) 432-4267
2. Drill documentation will be submitted through the proper channels of
Henderson Fire Department at the end of each calendar year.

Emergency Mgmt. Master Binder will be held in the Director of
Operations possession.
Staff will be briefed on Emergency procedures prior to the start of
school.
Director of Operations will check fire extinguishers regularly.
