Exodus 33:12-23
Version (NIV)

Moses and the Glory of

the LORD
12 Moses

said to the LORD, You have

been telling me, Lead these people,
but you have not let me know whom
you will send with me. You have said,
I know you by name and you have
found favor with me. 13 If you are
pleased with me, teach me your
ways so I may know you and
continue to find favor with you.
Remember that this nation is your
people.
14 The

LORD replied, My Presence will

go with you, and I will give you rest.
15 Then

Moses said to him, If your

Presence does not go with us, do not
send us up from here. 16 How will
anyone know that you are pleased
with me and with your people unless
you go with us? What else will
distinguish me and your people from
all the other people on the face of the
earth?
17 And

the LORD said to Moses, I will

do the very thing you have asked,

because I am pleased with you and I
know you by name.

The Message

12-13 Moses

said to GOD, Look, you

tell me, Lead this people, but you
dont let me know whom youre
going to send with me. You tell me, I
know you well and you are special to
me. If I am so special to you, let me
in on your plans. That way, I will
continue being special to you. Dont
forget, this is your people, your
responsibility.
14 GOD

said, My presence will go with

you. Ill see the journey to the end.
15-16 Moses

said, If your presence

doesnt take the lead here, call this
trip off right now. How else will it be
known that youre with me in this,
with me and your people? Are you
traveling with us or not? How else
will we know that were special, I and
your people, among all other people
on this planet Earth?
17 GOD

said to Moses: All right. Just

as you say; this also I will do, for I
know you well and you are special to
me. I know you by name.
18 Moses

said, Please. Let me see

your Glory.
19 GOD

said, I will make my

18 Then

Moses said, Now show me

your glory.
19 And

the LORD said, I will cause all

my goodness to pass in front of you,
and I will proclaim my name, the
LORD, in your presence. I will have
mercy on whom I will have mercy,
and I will have compassion on whom
I will have compassion. 20 But, he
said, you cannot see my face, for no
one may see me and live.
21 Then

the LORD said, There is a

place near me where you may stand

on a rock. 22 When my glory passes
by, I will put you in a cleft in the rock
and cover you with my hand until I
have passed by. 23 Then I will remove
my hand and you will see my back;
but my face must not be seen.

Goodness pass right in front of you;

Ill call out the name, GOD, right
before you. Ill treat well whomever I
want to treat well and Ill be kind to
whomever I want to be kind.
20 GOD

continued, But you may not

see my face. No one can see me and
live.
21-23 G OD

said, Look, here is a place

right beside me. Put yourself on this
rock. When my Glory passes by, Ill
put you in the cleft of the rock and
cover you with my hand until Ive
passed by. Then Ill take my hand
away and youll see my back. But you
wont see my face.

Jacob Wrestles With God

22 That

night Jacob got up and took

his two wives, his two female
servants and his eleven sons and
crossed the ford of the Jabbok.
23 After he had sent them across the
stream, he sent over all his
possessions. 24 So Jacob was left
alone, and a man wrestled with him

Jacob stayed behind by
