Installation Comments

Comparable to 7.9.6.x in total steps, but most config is now

automatic, like OBIEE (both good and bad)

OBIEE 11.1.1.7 installs WLS 10.3.5; OBIA req 10.3.6

You cannot install OBIA 11g into an existing BI Domain (yet)

Patches are located on OBIA downloads page

IDSP is optional, but requires Essbase in BI domain

Gotchas (Windows)
Make sure WLS node manager is running (Start BI Services
does not launch it)
Patching requires WinZip (for now)
WLS patch calls a *nix command and will fail; workaround is to
apply patches individually

Configuration Manager Comments

Functions both as a DAC and a means to simplify

maintenance in ODI
There

are operations you can do in either CM or ODI and

one should reflect completion in the other*

Not a 1:1 replacement for DAC; some things you can

only do in ODI

Much simpler to learn than DAC (but again, not a 1:1

replacement)

Web-based application with integrated WLS security

should prove valuable in implementations

*from what Ive seen so far

Functional Setup Manager Comments

Very sophisticated documentation for implementing OBIA

Lays out what you need to do
Takes you where need to go to do it (mostly)
Helps track your progress (with included reporting)

FSM is not required

You can complete tasks directly in CM if you know what youre
doing
A task only exists only once no matter how many projects you
create
Projects do not need to be marked 100% complete before ETL

Calling out FSM on slides is helpful, but for

implementation, its better to think of CM + FSM = CM

16

First Impressions

OBIA 11g feels like a definitive step forward, but it is a

first release, so expect some bummers

Functional Setup Manager will help streamline getting

clients up and running quickly and consistently, but
dont confuse it for a project planning tool, nor an
implementation validation tool.

Architecture is more complicated, but its all Oracle.

Wheres Waldo? If youre used to OBIA 7.9.x,

everything is therebut finding could be fast or slow.

ODI still too soon to tell.
