CCHS Current Trend Data

The data that was collected over the past three school years depicts an issue with students who are
considered to be truant. The definition of truancy directly relates to the Colorado Revised Statue that states that
a students are truant if the student, has four unexcused absences from public school in any one month or ten
unexcused absences during any school year (Colorado Department of Education, 2015, pg. 1). The data is
clear that there is a direct correlation with the amount of students who are considered to be truant and the age of
the student. This variation could be tied to the state law and the possible sanctions that can be applied to
students who are assigned to truancy court at the freshman and sophomore levels. In all three data samplings,
there is consistent data showing that there are at least twenty-four freshman that are truant, which is
approximately ten percent of that student body each year. In the same data sampling the numbers increase to at
least twenty-eight sophomores that are considered truant, which is approximately eleven percent of that student
body each year. From there the numbers take a drastic increase during the junior and senior years. I also
recognize an important correlation of the increase in truant students when I tracked specific classes throughout
the progression of school years. The freshman class of the 2012-2013 school year and the sophomore class of
the same year continue to increase in the number of truant students as the data progressed.
