The Concepts of

Punishment
BY: ARELI RODRIGUEZ

What is Punishment?
The consequence given in order to eliminate or reduce an inappropriate
behavior
Physical and Verbal punishment
Positive and Negative punishment

Differences in Punishment within

the Culture
A form of punishment that may be accepted in a certain culture can be seen
as abuse in another
New York Times article (May 28, 2002) executive director of the Chinese-American
Planning Council David Chen states, The Chinese believe I hit you because I love
you. The harder I hit you, the more I love you.
In Asia, your child is considered your property and you can do whatever you
want.

Difference between Punishment

and Discipline
Punishment act of exerting force and energy in order to eliminate or reduce
the problem
Child learns through fear

Discipline - act of consequence in which positively affects the child

Child learns from their mistakes through lessons

According to a kidsdevelopment article (October 14, 2015), Beth Morrisey

explains the difference between punishment and discipline, Punishment
does not necessarily teach children why the rules are in place, why the
rules are important or how they can act in accordance of the rules
Discipline, on the other hand, always carries a lesson which helps children
to understand what appropriate behaviors are and why they have become
accepted in our society.

The Effects of Punishment

Misused forms of punishment can negatively affect the individual
Resulting in aggressive behavior

2013 Study in Child Development Perspective found spanking and other

forms of physical punishment loses effectiveness, resulting in children not
learning
Effectiveness measured by how constant the targeted behavior is
recognized.
According to a ScienceDaily article in May 22, 2006, Florida State
University researchers discovered that individuals who were verbally
abused during their childhood resulted in them becoming highly self-critical
and at a high risk of depression and anxiety. This is due to verbal
punishment being misused, instead of correcting a behavior it decreases
ones confidence and self-esteem.
