The Effects of Cigarette Smoke on the Growth of Plants

Research Plan
Question:
How does cigarette smoke effect the growth of plants?
Hypothesis:
I believe the smoke from cigarettes does effect the growth of
plants, by stopping the growth of plants, because when plants
take in carbon dioxide theyre taking in smoke which affects the
plants energy to make food and release of oxygen.
Materials:
Plant
Water
Cigarettes

Data Analysis: The data will be represented through a bar graph

measuring the growth of the plant and the amount of time
cigarette smoke is around the plant.

Procedures:
1. Water the plant
2. Have the plant adjusted to the environment
3. Within an hour light a cigarette and move it in a circular
motion around the plant
4. When the cigarette goes out, water the plant about one cup
twice a day outside
5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 once a day
The independent variables are the amount of time the lighted
cigarette is near the plant and the amount of water given to
the plant after being around cigarette smoke. The dependent
variables are the plant growth and amount of time the cigarette
goes out.
Conclusion:
The plant stopped growing after the contact with the cigarette
smoke. Most of the plants leaves fell off and were covered in

grey, and the plant was drooping downward. The smoke from a
cigarette does stop a plants growth.
