Activity 1: Applying the Scientific Method

Direction: Follow the scientific method focusing on what you can immediately
observe that is happening in the environment at 8 o’clock in the morning. Use the data
sheet below to write down your answers. For the data analysis, assume that you
performed the test and were able to prove that your hypothesis is an answer to the
problem.

Location of Observation: At Home (terrace and backyard)

I. Making Observations and stating the Problem
-When I wake up every morning and came to water the plants I planted a months
ago, in which I place some in our backyard and some in our terrace, I observe that
the plants I placed in the backyard grews well/healthier than those plant I placed
in the terrace. Since then, I was wondering what's wrong on it;
a) Is there a problem in the amount of sunlight each plant receives?
b) or on the amount of water used in watering the plants?

II. Formulating Hypothesis

1. If I transfer the plants I placed in the terrace in the backyard for two weeks,
then it will grow healthy too.
2. If I use equal water on watering the both plants, then the plants will grow
both healthy.
3. If I replant those both plants coming from the backyard and terrace using
different soil, then it will remain the same (that the plant from the backyard
grews well than that in the terrace)
4. If I put fertilizer on both plants, then both plants will grow equally healthy.

III. Testing the Hypothesis with an experiment

1. Collect 3 same plants; 2 from the terrace and the one in the backyard.
2. Using 1 plant from the terrace and 1 plant from the backyard, replant the 2
plants in both area that receives enough sunlight.
3. Place the 1 excess plant in the terrace. (used in comparing the changes on the
one transferred in the backyard)
4. Use equal water in watering the 3 plants. (The 2 plants from the backyard and
1 in the terrace)
5. After two weeks, observe/compare changes on the plant transferred in the
backyard from the one stayed in the terrace.

IV. Stating the Conclusion

Based on the experimentation, the first hypothesis is accepted; that plants grew
better/healthier when it receives enough sunlight because sunlight is one of the
major need of plants in manufacturing their food through the process of
photosynthesis.
 Guide Questions:

1. What do you think will happen if the steps in scientific method are in different
order?
- If the steps in scientific method are in different order, then we cannot do the
finding of an answer to any problem well. In addition, we might not come up
with a best solution on the problem we observe or we cannot find an exact
answer in any problem that we want to know.
2. If you would be adding more steps to the scientific method, what would be
these steps? Discuss the additional steps you are proposing.
- Step of Recommendations, since looking for an answer in any
problem/phenomenon is considered also like conducting a research, in
scientific method we should also have a step of recommendations, because
recommendations are also an important detail because it is a way to know the
opinions of other individual that can help in developing/improving the answer
in a specific problem. Sometimes, by recommendations, we were able to think
ways to avoid those problems and expand/solve many problems since we
consider the better opinions of other individual.

Development of technology paved way especially in researches in the field of Science.

Science and technology evolution is very helpful to the world since it's development helps in
bringing revolution in different fields of medicine, agriculture, education, information and
technology, etc. Due to the advancement and development of science and technology, too
many innovations and inventions are developed that are used mainly along different fields.
Science and technology modernized most things in every aspect of life, starting from the
gadgets that we used everyday, the medicines we take when we are sick, the tools or
equipments used in the production of goods we need to be able to survive, and technologies
that are source of most information nowadays. So, the development of science and
technology is very important in our life most specifically to the development of our country.
