Final Portfolio Reflection

Dear Future English 1001 Students,

After taking this class, my writing skills drastically upgraded. I cant explain all the
improvements in my writing, so Ill just focus on three key areas; revising drafts, achieving a
voice, and my views on writing. In the beginning, I wasnt too fond of writing but now my entire
attitude towards it has changed.
I used to think that my first draft was my best draft because it listed fresh thoughts, and I would
dread writing multiple drafts. After doing activities such as the cut and paste work shop while
crafting the Personal Literacy Project, I watched my perfect first draft develop into an even better
final draft. For example, in my first draft of the PLP I wasnt going into great depth when
describing personal experiences, but by the end of the project I got in touch with my inner child
and my use of imagery began to blossom. Peer review drafts also contributed to the improvement
of my writing in ways such as staying on topic and remembering my audience. During the
Inquiry project I had trouble with finding an audience, the group conferences allowed input from
peers and I eventually settled with the audience they suggested. Through the revisions, I was able
to watch my essays grow and transform into something better.

Gaining a voice was the best achievement in my writing skills. During the process of my IP, I
learned that conclusions dont always have to wrap up my ideas or revert back to my
introduction. Questions, quotes, and strong statements could also make an intriguing conclusion.
After reading through final drafts of each project, I noticed my passion for incorporating stories
and experiences throughout my writing. I finally realized my strength when writing; narratives.
Before taking this course, I wasnt affectionate towards writing, now I dont mind sharing my
stories with the world.

Sincerely, Angella Gaines
