Although a Masters degree in counseling,

higher education or another related field is
typically preferred, a Bachelors degree is a
common minimal education requirement
for an Academic Success Specialist. With
the minimum education requirement, it is
then expected to have previous experience
with retention and/or recruitment
initiatives.

Academic Success Specialists need to

have an understanding of undergraduate
students, specifically the demographic of
students that are prevalent at their desired
location. It is also expected that they are
aware of university policies and
resourcesincluding academic structures
and organizations. Any internships or
experiences to supplement this knowledge
is preferred. Internship areas can include
but are not limited to: Financial Aid,
Student Affairs, Residence Hall
Association, Admission Services, Office of
Student Engagement. This is so that the
Academic Success Specialists make
effective use of university resources.
Similar to the desired education,
certification comes from having a Masters
degree and completing a required
internship and practicum in counseling.
Overall, it remains imperative to have a
state-issued credential to be able to advise
students about their academics.

best practices as well as training support
for both new and experienced advisors at
Arizona State University. There are even

scholarly resources that provide an

overview of advising theories. There are
several Advising Organizations presented
so that staff can stay current in academic
issues and affairs.
