Fromourbeginningasasmallschoolsafetycompany,wehavebeendedicatedto
promotingproactivestrategiestoimprovethechancesofsurvivalduringanactive
shooterevent.Weveworkedwiththousandsofpeopleinthehighereducation,K12,
professional,corporate,andgovernmentorganizationsallowingthemtoempowertheir
peopleusingALICE.
Ourdrivetomakeadifferenceandcontinuetoleadtheevolutioninactiveshooter
responseeducationisatthecoreofwhatmakesoursolutionssoeffective.AttheALICE
TrainingInstitute,werealwaysworkingtocreatenewstoriesofimprovement.From
teachersandadministratorstostudentsandparents,weteachskillsthatimproveyour
chancesofsurvivalanywhereyougoinlife.

Thethreatofanactiveshooterattackisrarebutveryreal.WeaimtoeradicatetheIt
canthappentomementalityandchangethewaypeopleinschools,universities,
businesses,hospitalsandplacesofworshiprespondtoarmedintruders.AttheALICE
TrainingInstitute,webelievethatindividualsshouldbeauthorizedandempoweredto
maketheirownlifesavingdecisions.Onceempoweredtomaketheirownlifesaving
decisions,individualsmustbetrainedinproactiveresponseoptions,ratherthanapassive,
mandated,onesizefitsallresponse.WewantallAmericanstohavetheknowledgeand
skillstosurvivewhenshotsarefired.Wecanachievethisbytrainingasmanypeopleas
possibleandimplementingtrainingindrillformintheK12setting.Wehaveseenthe
successfulresultsoffiredrills.Itstimetostartanticipatingmanmadedisasters.

OriginsofALICE

TheALICEprogramwascreatedoutofahusbandsdesireforhiswifetohaveabetter
planincaseofanactiveshooterevent.AftertheColumbineHighSchoolshooting,Greg
CranewasalawenforcementofficerintheDallas/Ft.Worthareaandhiswife,Lisa,was
anelementaryprincipal.Whilebothpreparedintheirprofessionallivesforthistypeof
tragicevent,itwasnotuntilafatefulconversationaroundthedinnertablethatbrought

thetwoworldstogetherandcreatedtheALICEprogram.AroundaChristmasEvedinner
in2001,whenanannouncementcameacrossthelocalnewsofanofficerbeingkilledin
thelineofdutytheconversationturnedtowardthedangersoflawenforcement.Although
hehadtrainedformanyyearstohaveofficersreadyforanactiveshootercall,Greg
askedLisaaquestionhehadneveraskedaschooladministrator,Whatareyalldoing
whilethepolicearemakingtheirwaytotheschool?Lisaexplainedtheschools
protocol,whichwasthestandardatthetime,WhenIfindoutwehaveanintruder,Iput
outaCodeRedoverthePA,theteachersgeteveryoneinaclassroom,lockthedoor,
turnoffthelights,sitinthecornerandwaitforthepolicetoarrive.Gregsaidforthe
firsttimetheabnormallyhighnumbersofkilledandwoundedintherecentschool
shootingsofthe90smadeperfectsensetheseresponsesmadepeopleeasytargets.He
didnotlikethatplanforLisaandthepeopleatherschoolsohesetouttofindabetter
plan.However,afterreadingtheworkofthesocalledExpertsinschoolshootingshe
foundthatintheend,whenthebulletsstartedflying,thestaffandstudentswereontheir
owntofigureitout.
Gregandafellowofficer,setouttocreateaplanbasedonthestrategiesthatbrought
themthroughsomeviolentshootingsituations.Astheydevelopedthestrategiesandran
theconceptsbyLisa,shewouldtellthemhowtheywouldworkintheschoolsetting.
Throughyearsofdevelopment,modifications,additions,deletionsandalotofinputfrom
otherALICEInstructorsacrossthecountry,ALICETraininghasevolvedintothefirst
programofitskindthatusesoptionsbased,proactive,survivalstrategiesinourcountry.
Now,manygovernmentalagencies,lawenforcementorganizationsandassociationshave
maderecommendationwhichmirrortheALICEconcepts.Wecontinuetoleadtheway
withcuttingedgeresearch,updatedmaterialsandaneverincreasingbodyofknowledge
andexperiencetohelpciviliansofalldemographicslearnstrategieswhichcanhelpthem
surviveanactiveshootersituationatschool,work,hospitals,churchoranywherethey
mayfindthemselvesunderattack.
Ourvisionistohaveallcitizenstohavetheskillsandknowledgeoftheiroptionsto
respondwhenshotsarefiredbecausetheyhavelearnedintheK12setting,justlikethey
donowwhentheyhearafirealarm.Ifthepolicecantbethereintimetohelp,thenext
bestthingistoprepareourcivilianpopulationtohelpthemselvesuntilpublicsafety
arrives.
