Van Jones This essay was a lot about how the author's father fought to grow up in the segregated southern area, and how he felt it was his duty to make poor, failing schools places of learning. He fought overcome the boundaries set by race and he won. I think that this story is very powerful and it shows just how far we have come as a society. It successfully demonstrated the courage of his father and highlighted the struggles of the common black man during that era. 2. Finding freedom in forgiveness Ronald Cotton and Jennifer Thompson - Cannino This essay was about a man, who is falsely accused of rape, and a woman who didn't know any better. It was an essay about how they learned to forgive each other and themselves. This was a very interesting essay because it shed light upon an odd relationship between two individuals who had both and wronged, and it illustrated the power of forgiveness. Both of the authors talks about how they were prisoners of their own hatred and how they needed to let go of that and I found it very moving how they found a way to forgive each other despite the hatred that they once felt. 3. Seeing beyond our differences Shari white This essay is very much about how the author was inspired by her parents, who were in an interracial marriage in the sixties, which of course was not easy for them. It also talked a lot about how, despite what many people say, all people at the core are just human beings I found that this essay offered an interesting point of view on the issue of race and segregation. Many people tend to look at differences that lie within others, but by doing so we ensure that the act of segregation will continue. It makes far more sense to focus on how we are the same, rather than different, and that is what this essay discusses and I find that very inspiring.
