    receivedalong,disjointedletterinwhichNormanBowkerdescribedtheproblemoffindinga
    meaningfuluseforhislifeafterthewar(OBrien149).ThisquoteshowsthatBowkerwrotethis
    lettertoOBrienrightbeforehekilledhimself.OBrienmayhaveincludedthissectionofthe
    storybecausehewantedtoshowhowmuchgoingtothewarcanchangeaperson,andthe
    waypeoplelookatthatperson.OBrienalsoincludeshowmuchofanimpacttheletterfrom
    NormanBowkerhadonhim.NormanBowkersletterhitmehard(OBrien151).OBrienmay
