Observation #1

Assessing a Newborn
Observation Record Form
Directions: Your instructor will lead you through a facilitated observation of a
newborn infant. He/she will attempt to solicit the behaviors indicated on the
accompanying assessing a Newborn handout. You should record your observations
on this form.
Observed Behavior in Newborns
1. Cries:
Hunger cry very intense
Change of diaper not very loud (can be the same as hunger)
Hard to determine at times
2. Responses to Faces/Voices:
Mom smiles and the baby returns or would make an O with her mouth
3. Smiles:
Baby smiles back at mom when she was talking to her
4. Interactional Synchrony:
Baby seemed happy when mom was talking to her
She imitated mom sticking out her tongue
5. Reactions to caregivers voice/face:
When Jasmine (one of the classmates) talked to her the baby responded
Mom stuck out tongue baby responded
When Jenifer (instructor for the class) talked and then the babys mom talked
the baby looked at mom
6. Reciprocal Shaping
Baby grabs on moms shirt
7. Reflexes:
Mom touched side of cheek baby turned toward moms hand
Puts fist in her mouth
Turned to her mom
7a. Sucking Reflex:
Doesnt really like pacifier makes a face when she doesnt want it
7b. Rooting Reflex
Turned towards moms hand when cheek was stroked
7c. Palmar Grasp:
Mom put finger by the babys palm and baby grabbed moms finger
7d. Eye Blink:
Mom waved hand by babys eyes and she blinked
7e. Babinski Reflex:

The babys foot curled up when mom stroke it


7f. Moro (startle) Reflex:
When she is put down to sleep
7g. Stepping Reflex:
Baby placed on top of table and feet began to form a stepping motion
7h. Tonic Neck Reflex:
